Steinfeld et al. [133] demonstrated the technical feasibility of solar decomposition of methane using a reactor with a fluidized bed of catalyst particulates. Experimentation was conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland) solar furnace delivering up to 15 kW with a peak concentration ratio of 3500 sun. A quartz reactor (diameter 2 cm) with a fluidized bed of Ni (90%)/Al2O3 catalyst and alumina grains was positioned in the focus of the solar furnace. The direct irradiation of the catalyst provided effective heat transfer to the reaction zone. The temperature was maintained below 577°C to prevent rapid deactivation of the catalyst. The outlet gas composition corresponded to 40% conversion of methane to H2 in a single pass. Concentrated solar radiation was used as a source of high-temperature process heat for the production of hydrogen and filamentous... [Pg.86]

Switzerland - the Paul Scherrer Institute demonstrated its PEM technology in combination with supercaps, first in a VW Bresa (January 2002) and later in a car with improved performance (October 2004). [Pg.40]

Switzerland - the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) established a strong collaboration with ETFIZ to improve bipolar plates for PEMs. The result of this collaboration was the liquid-cooled 1 kW PEM PowerPac, which was first demonstrated at the Hannover Fair in 2002. [Pg.45]

Start up company HT-Ceramics, which has developed a specific (anode supported thin layer electrolyte) SOFC system. The PEM research is carried out by the Paul Scherrer Institute in collaboration with the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and the University of applied science in Biel. The Paul Scherrer Institute is also researching DMFC systems, while the Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne is involved in research activities for HTcceramics. [Pg.177]

Europe, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Villigen, Switzerland has developed (and is planning to further improve) a highly sophisticated beam scanning system in order to exploit all the physical advantages of the proton beams. The scanning beam technique will be dealt with in more detail in the section on heavy ions (Sec. 4.4). [Pg.765]

A pilot plant jointly funded by the EU, the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Zurich (ETHZ) has successfully demonstrated this process in a 300 kW pilot plant at the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS) in Rehovot, near Tel Aviv, Israel. The plant has produced 45 kg of zinc per hour. This method of solar energy storage is not yet commercially available. [Pg.83]
