Most of the synthetic work directed toward the higher annulenes was earned out by Franz Sondheimer and his students first at Israel s Weizmann Institute and later at the University of London Sondheimer s research systematically explored the chemistry of these hydrocarbons and provided experimental venfication of Huckel s rule... [Pg.456]

This is similar to the simple atom-atom truncation except that dipolar groups will never be split by the cutoff distance. There is still the problem of discontinuities, but these are less extreme than in the case of atom-atom truncations. In cases where water is explicitly included, this approach exhibits the curious phenomena of hot water and cold protein if the entire system is coupled to a heatbath. This is because the more mobile atoms (the water) are subjected to more discontinuities which makes them hotter than the less mobile atoms (the protein) (Levitt, M., Weizmann Institute, personal communication, 1986.). It should be noted that this is one of the most commonly used methods of truncation for simulations where CHARMM is not used. For the group-group truncation, these calculations are in progress and will be reported elsewhere. For this type of truncation, both methods where the list is updated on... [Pg.132]

The facilities provided by the Kimmel Center for Archaeological Science at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, and the Institute of Archaeology, University College, London, England, served as heavenly places in which to gather data and write the libraries and librarians of both these institutions provided unlimited help and inexhaustible sources of information. [Pg.25]

These successes in the area of precellular structures led Daniel Segre et al. from the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot to publish the lipid world hypothesis together with Deamer. The authors are of the opinion that the (more probable) lipid world determined chemical and molecular evolution on the primeval Earth prior to the (less probable) RNA world . Further development stages (or worlds ) finally led to biogenesis (Segre et al., 2001). [Pg.270]

Over the past few years, both at the Weizmann Institute and in the Cavendish Laboratory, we have used a modification of the mica approach to measure the interaction forces F(D) between two mica surfaces,a distance D apart, immersed in organic and aqueous liquid media, both in the absence and in the presence of polymer layers absorbed onto the mica from the liquid. We have studied a number of model systems covering a wide range of conditions, using monodispersed, well characterized polymers. [Pg.228]

Acknowledgments The author would like to acknowledge the collaborations of Drs. David Williams, Ronald Ziolo and Valeri Krongauz (visiting scientist, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel) in addition to the contributions made by John VanDusen and Ronald Weagley, all employees at Xerox Webster Research Center. Finally the role of two students in this effort, Cheryl Hanzlik (APS Summer Intern, Univ. of Rochester) and Bonnie Buchalter (Cooperative Education Employee, Manhattan College) is acknowledged. [Pg.54]

During the same period Mark was active on behalf of German scientists, he was nominated by Chaim Weizmann to head the Scientific Planning Committee of the newly established Weizmann Institute. Throwing himself into the job with unusual zest, he visited Rehovot the summer of 1946 despite the threat of terrorist attacks, and ascertained first hand the requirements of the Institure. Working closely with David and Ernst Bergmann, Aharon and Ephraim Katchalski, and C. Pekeris in Rehovot, and I. Fankuchen, K. Stern, and W. P. Hohenstein in Brooklyn, he organized many of the operational functions of the Institute and in 1947 procured its first sophisticated laboratory equipment. [Pg.117]

Professor E. Katchalski-Katzir of the Weizmann Institute and newly named Herman F. Mark Professor of Polymer Science at the Polytechnic in Brooklyn points out that Mark was important to the Weizmann Institute in another way. "Mark , he says, "was the first scientist to establish ties between Israeli scientists and the international community." In the years since 1947,... [Pg.117]

Mark has served as Vice-President in Charge of Project Research of the Board of Governors of the Weizmann Institute, and in 1975 he was elected as an Honorary Chairman of its Scientific Advisory Council. [Pg.117]
