Patient safety basic research

By best research evidence Sackett means clinically relevant research, often from the basic sciences of medicine, but especially from patient centred clinical research into the accuracy and precision of diagnostic tests (including the clinical examination), the power of prognostic markers, and the efficacy and safety of therapeutic,... [Pg.25]

A second reason is that for all the books, reports, articles and Websites devoted to patient safety, there is still no straightforward overview of the field. The books that are available are mostly multi-author edited texts which, while they bring a rich diversity of perspective, are not primarily aimed at explaining the basic principles, characteristics and direction of the field. My aim has been to show the landscape of patient safety how it evolved, the research that underpins the area, the key conceptual issues that have to be addressed, and the practical action needed to reduce error and harm and, when harm does occur, to help those involved. [Pg.427]

This chapter introduces the fundamental concepts of patient safety. Research underlying the basic concepts of patient safety comes from outside health care, primarily from engineering, aviation, psychology, and sociology. These areas of inquiry replace the impoverished conceptualization of error reduction with the more robust concept of complex adaptive systems. The framing principles are ... [Pg.44]

Chapter Two, Error and Harm in Health Care, departs momentarily from the patient safety manifesto, as already mentioned, to provide background knowledge on current research in patient safety, the patient safety movement to date, and the reasons why today s health care system is so error-prone. Chapter Three, Understanding the Basics of Patient Safety, provides an overview of basic concepts and terms in the science of patient safety. These concepts and terms fe>rm the foundational touchpoints of the book. [Pg.380]

Today, a growing activity to improve patient safety in all domains of medicine is reality. This chapter deals with patient safety research in general, but is also about strategies to implement this evidence in the daily clinical work treating patients on dialysis. Good clinical research practice has been well established for some years. In the domain of dialysis access, further basic, clinical, epidemiological and health service research will be important to further improve patient safety as a whole. 2015 S. Karger AG, Basel... [Pg.262]

Patient safety depends directly on research. As described above, different methods are known in the field of dialysis access. Figure 2 gives an overview of research activities in basics, clinics epidemiology and health services. [Pg.270]

The basic aim of medical research is to improve clinical practice, and this should be evidence based, if possible. Clinically relevant research evidence may relate to basic medical science, but it especially relates to patient-centered cUnical research, e.g., to the study of the accuracy and precision of diagnostic tests, the power of prognostic markers, and the efficacy and safety of therapeutic, rehabilitative, and preventive regimens. New evidence from clinical research at the same time invalidates previously accepted diagnostic tests and treatments and replaces them with new ones that are more powerful, more accurate, more efficacious, and safer [1]. Ethical decision making is based on the Declaration of Helsinki,... [Pg.19]

Modeled after the Patient Safety Academy, these one-day events were designed to cover the basic concepts, research basis, and leading-edge thinking that goes into patient and employee safety. The agenda covered the following topics ... [Pg.236]
