Knapweed litter, collected from a severely infested site, was air-dried and ground to pass a 20-mesh screen. To determine the phytotoxicity of the litter, the ground material was applied to m plots on a pasture site in 1981 and on two rangeland sites in 1982. Sand (650 g) was combined with each knapweed treatment to produce an even dispersal of litter. The litter was applied in November and grass yields, estimated on a dry matter basis, were determined in the following June. [Pg.239]

In an initial study at the pasture site, replicate samples of dyed polyester, undyed wool, undyed cotton, and synthetic indigo-dyed denim were placed above (30 cm depth) and below (60 cm depth) cadavers and at 30 cm and 60 cm depth in control graves. When exhumed at 24 months, cadaver B was still actively decomposing with extensive adipocere formation at the base of the grave. This was confirmed by determination of carbon dioxide respiration rates for soil samples taken at the time of recovery (Wilson 2002). It was clear that decomposition of the cadaver had influenced the decomposition rates of the textiles depending on location in the grave after 24 months of burial (Table 7.6). [Pg.186]

However, the most interesting of the Baccharis species is most certainly B. coridifolia. This plant is well-known in Brazil as being one of that country s most toxic plants (49) and is a serious hazard to livestock who graze in pastures populated by B. coridifolia (49). Four separate collections were made of B. coridifolia (48). Three of these collections were "From several miles outside Curitaba and a fourth collection in a pasture near Santa Maria, the site of an earlier collection of 13. coridifolia (47), and several hundred miles away from Curitaba. Based on these results, Burger and Fajardo returned to the Aymaraes region in July 2004. Discussions with a farmer from near Chalhuanca, the provincial capital of Aymaraes, provided a lead to obsidian outcrops along a west-to-southwest winding road in the Huayllaripa drainage. The first outcrop was found at a site named Potreropampa or plain of pasture land about 32 km from Chalhuanca at an altitude of 4128 masl. Obsidian nodules were embedded in volcanic tuff and the nodules were mostly 3-6 cm in diameter but a few were up to 10-15 cm. A fair quantity of lithic debris was observed. [Pg.537]
