Particulate filter respirator

Dust masks, or particulate filter respirators, protect the respiratory system against any kind of inhaled particles. The simplest type, in the form of a cone-shaped fibrous filter that fits over the nose and mouth, is held in place by an elastic band around the back of the head. It is disposable, relatively comfortable to wear, and is useful when the dust is neither excessive nor toxic. It becomes readily clogged and should be discarded and replaced whenever breathing becomes restricted. Its use should not be carried over from day to day.

A container filled with sorbents and catalysts that remove gases and vapors from air drawn through the unit. The canister may also contain an aerosol (particulate) filter to remove solid or liquid particles. See also Respirator. 

Filter Respirators Filter respirators remove particulates through mechanical filters. There are filters for specific types and sizes of particulates. Some filter respirators are disposable. For some, one can change filters. Filter respirators do not protect against gases and vapors. 

Respirators should comply with national or European standards such as EN 143 for Particulate filters and EN 149 for Filtering half masks to protect against particles. Distinction has to be made between suitability for solid or liquid particle filtration. 

Local regulations for exposure limit should be followed. If these are exceeded, air-purifying respirators with a particulate filter should be used. As a principle of good industrial hygiene, safety spectacles with side-shields or better protection should be worn when handling titanium dioxide.
