Figure 18 is an entrainment or gas-carryiag capacity chart (25). The operating conditions and particle properties determine the vertical axis the entrainment is read off the dimensionless horizontal axis. For entrainment purposes, the particle density effect is considered through the ratio of the particle density to the density of water. When the entrainable particle-size distribution is smaller than the particle-size distribution of the bed, the entrainment is reduced by the fraction entrainable, ie, the calculated entrainment rate from Figure 18 is multipfled by the weight fraction entrainable. [Pg.80]

The physical properties of spray-dried materials are subject to considerable variation, depending on the direction of flow of the inlet gas and its temperature, the degree and uniformity of atomization, the solids content of the feed, the temperature of the feed, and the degree of aeration of the feed. The properties of the product usually of greatest interest are (1) particle size, (2) bulk density, and (3) dustiness. The particle size is a function of atomizer-operating conditions and also of the solids content, liquid viscosity, liquid density, and feed rate. The model is able to predict the influence of mixing on particle properties and kinetic rates on different scales for a continuously operated reactor and a semibatch reactor with different types of impellers and under a wide range of operational conditions.
