Part-time work responsibility

There was an inconsistent use of safety representatives between the licensee staff and the contractors. (In the U.K., such safety representatives are trade union representatives who take on part-time safety responsibilities in addition to carrying out their normal work for their employer.)... 

Government policies to encourage universities to attract more students, and university policies to attract and admit more students, have seen significant increases in the numbers of less well prepared students undertaking engineering studies without a commensurate increase in teaching resources. At the same time, student commitment to study has reduced in response to increased commitment to part time work, leading to a trend of student non-attendance of classes and incomplete attempts of tutorial questions and assessment tasks. 

The fluctuation dissipation theorem relates the dissipative part of the response fiinction (x") to the correlation of fluctuations (A, for any system in themial equilibrium. The left-hand side describes the dissipative behaviour of a many-body system all or part of the work done by the external forces is irreversibly distributed mto the infinitely many degrees of freedom of the themial system. The correlation fiinction on the right-hand side describes the maimer m which a fluctuation arising spontaneously in a system in themial equilibrium, even in the absence of external forces, may dissipate in time. In the classical limit, the fluctuation dissipation theorem becomes / /., w) = w).

A host of carriers, with a wide variety of ion selectivities, have been proposed for this task. Most of them have been used for the recognition of alkali and alkaline metal cations (e.g., clinically relevant electrolytes). A classical example is the cyclic depsipeptide valinomycin (Fig. 5.13), used as the basis for the widely used ISE for potassium ion (38). This doughnut-shaped molecule has an electron-rich pocket in the center into which potassium ions are selectively extracted. For example, the electrode exhibits a selectivity for K+ over Na+ of approximately 30,000. The basis for the selectivity seems to be the fit between the size of the potassium ion (radius 1.33 A) and the volume of the internal cavity of the macrocyclic molecule. The hydrophobic sidechains of valinomycin stretch into the lipophilic part of the membrane. In addition to its excellent selectivity, such an electrode is well behaved and has a wide working pH range. Strongly acidic media can be employed because the electrode is 18,000 times more responsive to K+ than to H+. A Nernstian response to potassium ion activities, with a slope of 59mV/pK+, is commonly observed... 

The technical managers shall have their residence at a distance from the working place which allows them to assume their responsibilities fully. If the size and nature of the company allow their activity on a part-time basis, it is advisable to specify the responsibilities in writing and to document the on-site working time on request of the authorities. 

Each contract employer should have a facility employee who has oversight responsibility for his or her work. In some situations, assigning an individual, whether fiiU- or part time, with direct, day-to-day involvement with the contractor s activities might be warranted. 

The use of independent contractors and part-time, temporary, seasonal, and leased workers has expanded tremendously in recent years. On the positive side, contingent employment relationships are, in many respects, a sensible response to today s competitive global marketplace various forms of contingent work can offer benefits to... 

Contrast this to the daily operational realities of hospital care with 24/7/365 coverage requirements and increasing part-time employment. Instead of a team, a crew is working. A crew is assembled from a talent pool unit staff, float team, physician practice, deployed staff from other disciplines and departments. Each member brings individual expertise and technical competence. They form together to complete work by shift, by episode of care, or in brief encounters. After a time interval, they redistribute and may or may not reassemble again. This has serious implications for standardization and simplification of work processes, clearly defined roles and responsibilities such as attending physican and resident, and protocols for reports, communications, and physican notifications. 

A little time on your part will save your institution and others enormous amounts of time and money. So think of labeling hazardous waste as a normal and necessary part of your responsibility when working in the laboratory. Just do it ...
