The Fluorescence Properties of Paper. Luminescence properties provide highly distinctive forensic characteristics, as shown by Jones (8). In a current study in this Institute, the fluorescence properties of several types of paper were determined under excitation with Hg radiation, and this work will be reported in greater detail elsewhere (33). We note here that quantitative fluorescent emission spectrometry is not, per se, sufficient for forensic paper identification almost all papers that show any significant fluorescence emit a similar spectrum due to a... 

In summary, fluorescence does not appear to have promise as a prime forensic tool for paper identification at present.

Note. The period of 5-8 hours recommended above for attaining an equilibrium between the vapour molecules of the mixed solvent and those absorbed by the paper strip is essential if accurate R values are required for identification of mixed amino-acids. To illustrate the separation, as in the above experiment, this period may be reduced to about 2 hours.

The Department of Transportation classifies HCl as a corrosive material and requires that it be transported in DOT-approved deHvery vessels. Tank cars must conform to 103B, 103B-W, or DOT 111A60W5 specifications. Tank trailers must conform to DOT MC-310, MC-311, MC-312, or DOT-412 specifications with display of a corrosive placard on both sides, front, and rear of the tank. The United Nations identification number for muriatic acid is UN1789, which must appear on aH shipping papers and placards.

As with textiles the principal reasons for the coloring paper are for aesthetic appearance and utihtarian purposes. Aesthetic appearance includes colored background for printed material, colored writing papers, colored household products to harmonize with interior decor, and many other diverse uses dictated by individual tastes. Utihtarian purposes include identification of multicopy forms, identification of manufacturer or marketer of specific materials or products, opaqueness or hiding power of packaged material, or to control consistency of paper manufactured from various colored raw materials.

Earlier, a special issue of Materials Science and Engineering (Jones and Kurz 1984) to mark the 30th anniversary of the identification of constitutional supercooling includes 21 concise survey papers which constitute an excellent source for assessing the state of knowledge on solidification at that stage. Another source is a textbook (Kurz and Fisher 1984) published the same year. 

Labels are mostly small versions of placards. Labels may be found not only on metal containers, but also those made of wood, plastic, carboard, and even paper bags. Since federeil labels require only one label on the outside of shipping containers, labels may not be visible due to the way they are loaded. Containers eire also sometimes intentionally mislabled to prevent identification of illegally shipped material.
