Silicone paints

A further use of cadmium pigments is in paints and coatings (powder paints, silicone resins, and automotive topcoats) but this is declining. [Pg.109]

Nowadays, amorphous silicon dioxide may be used as corrosion-resistant coatings in various types of cans and as moisture-impermeable films, as well as for rheology control in materials such as paints, silicone rubbers, polyester compounds, dental formulations, emulsions, cosmetics, and excipients in pharmaceuticals. [Pg.1278]

Solid, rubbery silicones likewise retain their plasticity at low temperatures and are resistant to many forms of chemical attack they are now incorporated in paints for resisting damp and for waterproofing. Silicones are also used in moulds to avoid sticking of the casting to the mould. [Pg.191]

Silicone resins with high phenyl contents may be used with medium or short oil alkyds as blends in air-dried or baked coatings to improve heat or weather resistance the alkyd component contributes to adhesion and flexibiUty. AppHcations include insulation varnishes, heat-resistant paints, and marine coatings. [Pg.42]

Silicone Fluids. Sihcone fluids are used in a wide variety of appHcations, including damping fluids, dielectric fluids, poHshes, cosmetic and personal care additives, textile finishes, hydraiflic fluids, paint additives, and heat-transfer oils. Polydimethylsiloxane oils are manufactured by the equihbrium polymerisation of cycHc or linear dimethyl silicone precursors. Trifunctional organosilane end groups, typically trimethylsilyl (M), are used, and the ratio of end group to chain units (D), ie, M/D, controls the ultimate average molecular weight and viscosity (112). Low viscosity fluids,... [Pg.50]

One of the chief uses of chloromethane is as a starting material from which silicone polymers are made. Dichloromethane is widely used as a paint stripper. Trichloromethane was once used as an inhalation anesthetic, but its toxicity caused it to be replaced by safer materials many years ago. Tetrachloromethane is the starting material for the preparation of several chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), at one time widely used as refrigerant gases. Most of the world s industrialized nations have agreed to phase out all uses of CFCs because these compounds have been implicated in atmospheric processes that degrade the Earth s ozone layer. [Pg.167]

Modified or pure silicone resin with aluminum These silicone-based aluminum paints can be used for temperatures between 260° and 540°C. They require a minimum temperature for curing (usually about 260° C) and in general have poor corrosion and weather resistance. [Pg.132]

Epoxy based primer systems remain the best suited for the corrosion protection of magnesium. Cathodic epoxy electrophoretic paints , chromate inhibited epoxy-polyamide primers and high temperature stoving epoxy sealers are used to provide protection up to 180°C. For higher temperature applications up to 300°C, epoxy silicone or polyimide based systems can be used. [Pg.758]

Silicone polymers having high heat stability and excellent chemical resistance are available. They are very expensive and hence are not commonly found in paint coatings. [Pg.585]

Some elements come in and out of fashion, so to speak. Sixty years ago, elemental silicon was a chemical curiosity. Today, ultrapure silicon has become the basis for the multibillion-dollar semiconductor industry. Lead, on the other hand, is an element moving in the other direction. A generation ago it was widely used to make paint pigments, plumbing connections, and gasoline additives. Today, because of the toxicity of lead compounds, all of these applications have been banned in the United States. [Pg.3]

David et al. [184] have shown that cool on-column injection and the use of deactivated thermally stable columns in CGC-FID and CGC-F1D-MS for quantitative determination of additives (antistatics, antifogging agents, UV and light stabilisers, antioxidants, etc.) in mixtures prevents thermal degradation of high-MW compounds. Perkins et al. [101] have reported development of an analysis method for 100 ppm polymer additives in a 500 p,L SEC fraction in DCM by means of at-column GC (total elution time 27 min repeatability 3-7 %). Requirements for the method were (i) on-line (ii) use of whole fraction (LVI) and (iii) determination of high-MW compounds (1200 Da) at low concentrations. Difficult matrix introduction (DMI) and selective extraction can be used for GC analysis of silicone oil contamination in paints and other complex analytical problems. [Pg.198]

Silicon carbide (carborundum) Talc Bluish-black, very hard crystals. Used as an abrasive and refractory material. A hydrous magnesium silicate used in ceramics, cosmetics, paint and pharmaceuticals. [Pg.52]

Adhesion of, e.g., paint on polymeric materials such as in automotive bumper material may be poor because of silicon grease being present at the surface as a result of handling the bumper before applying the paint. By using ESCA such problems can be tackled easily and customer complaints can be refuted or accepted. [Pg.678]

Silicone paints are formed by controlled hydrolysis and condensation of alkyl alkox-ysilanes, and may be encountered either alone or in formulations with other synthetic resins. The typical structural unit in the polymer chain is dimethyl siloxane, and pyrolysis of such resins takes place with random chain scission and the extended formation of stable cyclic fragments. In Figure 12.14 the pyrogram of a silicone resin is shown, with cyclic siloxane oligomers eluting at the shorter retention times, followed by the linear siloxane fragments. [Pg.356]
