Paint making

Although formulation is an art, science finds its place in the characterisation of the raw materials, in the design and testing of the series of experimental formulae and in the interpretation of the results. In addition to possessing an intimate knowledge of pigments, binders and solvents, the paint formulator must also be well acquainted with raw material costs and availability, paint making machinery, and the market s performance requirements. 

The search for new, effective anticorrosive pigments with low toxicity to replace red lead and chromates in paints has occupied the attention of many paint-making companies recently. Barium metaborate, calcium molybdate and zinc molybdate have been identified as possible compounds but they have not found general acceptance in the United Kingdom and western Europe, most probably because of their lower cost effectiveness.

A little more than 50 years ago the American coating industry could be correctly described as a commercialized art form. Neither science nor advanced technology had been allowed to intrude upon the concepts of "paint making"—some of which were secrets handed down from father to son for a hundred years. 

In general the paint-making process can be subdivided into four main stages ... 

Quality Assurance. Almost every aspect of the paint-making process is subjected to quality assurance measures. Depending on the type of product, this involves a number of eorrection stages and delay periods, particularly in the adjustment tanks. 

The wide variety of paint formulations are reflected in the variety of paint-making processes. Figure 7.3 summarizes the essential features of these processes. Only a few special products (e.g., putties, plasters, or underbody protection materials) are not covered by this scheme they are produced by special proprietary procedures (generally of the one-pot type).

Dispersion. The liquid semifinished products (intermediates) used in paint making are prepared in a similar manner to varnishes (see Section 7.2.1). The most important stage in the production of pigment-containing paints is complete wetting and uniform distribution (i.e., dispersion) of the solid pigment particles in the liquid, film-...

Paint-making conditions should be reproduced in the laboratory when necessary. Often it is also useful to take into account the production boundary conditions (e.g., maximum and minimum temperature during stoving). If particularly good correlation of test results between a paint manufacturer and paint user is necessary, identical equipment (panels, spray units, etc.) must be used for sample preparation.
