We showed that the application of PEG/CO2 biphasic catalysis is also possible in aerobic oxidations of alcohols [15]. With regard to environmental aspects it is important to develop sustainable catalytic technologies for oxidations with molecular oxygen in fine chemicals synthesis, as conventional reactions often generate large amoimts of heavy metal and solvent waste. In the biphasic system, palladium nanoparticles can be used as catalysts for oxidation reactions because the PEG phase both stabilises the catalyst particles and enables product extraction with SCCO2. [Pg.97]

Since its discovery in 1980,7 the Sharpless expoxidation of allylic alcohols has become a benchmark classic method in asymmetric synthesis. A wide variety of primary allylic alcohols have been epoxidized with over 90% optical yield and 70-90% chemical yield using TBHP (r-BuOOH) as the oxygen donor and titanium isopropoxide-diethyl tartrate (DET, the most frequently used dialkyl tartrate) as the catalyst. One factor that simplifies the standard epoxidation reaction is that the active chiral catalyst is generated in situ, which means that the pre-preparation of the active catalyst is not required. [Pg.196]

Results of a chemical activation induced by ultrasound have been reported by Nakamura et al. in the initiation of radical chain reactions with tin radicals [59]. When an aerated solution of R3SnH and an olefin is sonicated at low temperatures (0 to 10 °C), hydroxystannation of the double bond occurs and not the conventional hydrostannation achieved under silent conditions (Scheme 3.10). This point evidences the differences between radical sonochemistry and the classical free radical chemistry. The result was interpreted on the basis of the generation of tin and peroxy radicals in the region of hot cavities, which then undergo synthetic reactions in the bulk liquid phase. These findings also enable the sonochemical synthesis of alkyl hydroperoxides by aerobic reductive oxygenation of alkyl halides [60], and the aerobic catalytic conversion of alkyl halides into alcohols by trialkyltin halides [61]. [Pg.91]

Electrochemically generated nickei(lll) oxide, deposited onto a nickel plate, is generally useful for the oxidation of alcohols in aqueous alkali [49]. The immersion of nickel in aqueous alkali results in the formation of a surface layer of nickel(ll) oxide which undergoes reversible electrochemical oxidation to form nickel(lll) oxide with a current maximum in cyclic voltammetry at 1.13 V vj. see, observed before the evolution of oxygen occurs [50]. This electrochemical step is fast and oxidation at a prepared oxide film, of an alcohol in solution, is governed by the rate of the chemical reaction between nickel oxide and the substrate [51]. When the film thickness is increased to about 0.1 pm, the oxidation rate of organic species increases to a rate that is fairly indifferent to further increases in the film thickness. This is probably due to an initial increase in the surface area of the electrode [52], In laboratory scale experiments, the nickel oxide electrode layer is prepared by prior electrolysis of nickel sulphate at a nickel anode [53]. It is used in an undivided cell with a stainless steel cathode and an alkaline electrolyte. [Pg.270]
