Miscellaneous. Flame-resistant cross-linked polyethylene can be made with a number of fluoroborates and antimony oxide. This self-extinguishing material may contain the fluoroborates of NH, Na", K", Ca ", Mg ", Sr ", or Ba " in amounts of 4—20% (76). Miscellaneous Reactions. Ahyl alcohol can be isomerized to propionaldehyde [123-38-6] in the presence of sohd acid catalyst at 200—300°C. When copper or alumina is used as the catalyst, only propionaldehyde is obtained, because of intramolecular hydrogen transfer. On the other hand, acrolein and hydrogen are produced by a zinc oxide catalyst. In this case, it is considered that propionaldehyde is obtained mainly by intermolecular hydrogen transfer between ahyl alcohol and acrolein (31). [Pg.74]

Among simple ionic salts cerium(III) acetate [17829-82-2] as commercially prepared, has lV2 H2O, has a moderate (- 100 g/L) aqueous solubiUty that decreases with increased temperature, and is an attractive precursor to the oxide. Cerous sulfate [13454-94-9] can be made in a wide range of hydrated forms and has solubiUty behavior comparable to that of the acetate. Many double sulfates having alkaU metal and/or ammonium cations, and varying degrees of aqueous solubiUty are known. Miscellaneous Commercial Applications. Dimer acids are components of "downweU" corrosion inhibitors for oil-drilling equipment (see Petroleum Corrosion and corrosion inhibitors). This may account for 10% of current dimer acid use (71). The acids, alkyl esters, and polyoxyalkylene dimer esters are used commercially as components of metal-working lubricants (see Lubrication). Dimer esters have achieved some use in specialty lubricant appHcations such as gear oils and compressor lubricants. The dimer esters, compared to dibasic acid esters, polyol esters and poly(a-olefin)s, are higher in cost and of higher viscosity. The higher viscosity, however, is an advantage in some specialties, and the dimer esters are very stable thermally and can be made quite oxidatively stable by choice of proper additives. [Pg.117]
