The textbook s organization can be divided into four parts. Chapters 1-3 serve as an introduction, providing an overview of analytical chemistry (Chapter 1) a review of the basic tools of analytical chemistry, including significant figures, units, and stoichiometry (Chapter 2) and an introduction to the terminology used by analytical chemists (Chapter 3). Familiarity with the material in these chapters is assumed throughout the remainder of the text. 

A more simplified description is a unit that combusts materials in the presence of oxygen at temperatures normally ranging from 800 to 1650°C. A typical configuration of an incinerator is shown in Figure 9. Typical types of incineration units that are discussed herein are catalytic oxidation, fluidized beds, hquid injection, multiple hearth furnaces, and rotary kiln. Thermal desorption is also discussed. However, an overview of the main factors affecting incinerator performance is presented first, below. 

Mechanical flotation machines are most commonly used in the mineral industiy, while pneumatic column-type units are gaining popularity in recent years. Surveys by Harris (1976), Young (1982), Bar-beiy (1982), and Mavros (1991) provide a detailed overview of the process-engineering aspec ts of mineral flotation devices in particular and systems in general. 

While a detailed treatment is beyond the scope of this section, a few of the organizations which generate standards of major importance to the chemical-process industries in the United States are Fisted here. An excellent overview is presented in the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology (3ded., Wiley, New York, 1978-1980). 

Overview Interpretation is the process for using the raw or adjusted unit measurements to troubleshoot, estimate parameters, detect faults, or develop a plant model. The interpretation of plant performance is defined as a discreet step but is often done simultaneously with the identification of hypotheses and suitable measurements and the treatment of those measurements. It is isolated here as a separate process for convenience of discussion.

Batteries, both primary and secondary, have become very big business indeed, which moreover is growing rapidly. Salkind (1998) in a concise overview of the entire domain of battery types and technologies, estimates that in 1996, the world market in the two types of battery combined totalled ss 33 billion dollars, and that the ratio of secondary to primary battery sales is steadily edging upwards. In spite of its poor charge density per unit mass, the lead-acid battery still accounts for more than a quarter of the total, because it costs so much less than its rivals and lasts well. 

Step 2.1 R ne the Initial Checklist. Table 1 is a checklist of unit operations. Apply this as an initial guide and checklist that can be used to identify each unit operation within the unit process that the audit will focus on. You may have to make additions to the list, because it is meant to be a general overview. Next to each unit operation that applies to the unit process of interest, provide a brief description of its function or purpose. This will prove useful in developing a process flow scheme in Step 3. A large number of chiral crowns have been prepared by numerous groups. The reader is directed to the tables at the end of this chapter to obtain an overview of these structures. It would not be useful to try to recount the synthetic approaches used in the preparation of all of these compounds we have chosen rather to subdivide this mass of compounds into three principal groups. The groups are (1) Cram s chiral binaphthyl systems (2) chiral crowns based on the tartaric acid unit and (3) crowns incorporating sugar subunits. These are discussed in turn, below. 

To complete this overview of chain models, we mention the dimer models, which represent the amphiphiles by just two units attached to each other [153-157]. They have been used to study curved bilayers [153], the kinetics of phase separation between oil and water in the presence of surfactants [155], and some aspects of self-assembled micelles [154,157] (see below). 

This section is an overview of the evolntion of standards and codes for flame arresters from varions organizations in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Enropean conntries. Brief snmmaries of the contents and reqnirements of varions standards and codes are presented in Chapter 8.

The final chapter in this volume by Alexander Sadimenko (University of Fort Hare, South Afiica) continues a series by this author on the organometaUic chemistry of heterocycles, of which 0,S monoheterocycles and N,P,Si,B monoheterocycles were published in volumes 78 and 79, respectively. The organometaUic chemistry of pyrazole is so broad that the present overview does not include the polyfunctional, chelating frameworks containing pyrazolyl units, which are typified by the pyrazolyl borate derivatives. These will be the subject of a future chapter. 

Vitamin K represents two groups of substances named phylloquinones (vitamin Kl produced by plants) and menaquinones-n (MK-n vitamin K2). Menaquinones are synthesized by bacteria, using repeated 5-carbon units in the molecules side chain, n stands for the number of 5-carbon units. Interestingly, MK-4 is synthesized only in small amounts by bacteria but can be produced by animals (including humans) from phylloquinones and is found in a number of organs.
