Usually it is the skeletal or striated muscles that will require therapy for painful spasm or will need to be relaxed to allow the surgeon to gain access to the abdomen easily. Muscle spasm may be associated with a trauma or may be brought on by multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, stroke, or an injury to the spinal cord. Severe cold, an interruption of blood supply to a muscle, or over exertion of the muscle also can lead to spasms. A muscle spasm actually is an increase in muscle tone brought on by an abnormality in motor control by the spinal nerves. [Pg.454]

The chemistry of cement slurries is complex. Ultrafiltration. Membranes are used that are capable of selectively passing large molecules (>500 daltons). The action of redox metal promoters with MEKP appears to be highly specific. Cobalt salts appear to be a unique component of commercial redox systems, although vanadium appears to provide similar activity with MEKP. Cobalt activity can be supplemented by potassium and 2inc naphthenates in systems requiring low cured resin color lithium and lead naphthenates also act in a similar role. Quaternary ammonium salts (14) and tertiary amines accelerate the reaction rate of redox catalyst systems. The tertiary amines form beneficial complexes with the cobalt promoters, faciUtating the transition to the lower oxidation state. Copper naphthenate exerts a unique influence over cure rate in redox systems and is used widely to delay cure and reduce exotherm development during the cross-linking reaction. [Pg.319]

Sutures are required to hold tissues together until the tissues can heal adequately to support the tensions exerted on the wound duting normal activity. Sutures can be used ia skin, muscle, fat, organs, and vessels. Nonabsorbable sutures are designed to remain ia the body for the life of the patient, and are iadicated where permanent wound support is required. Absorbable sutures are designed to lose strength gradually over time by chemical reactions such as hydrolysis. These sutures are ultimately converted to soluble components that are then metabolized and excreted ia urine or feces, or as carbon dioxide ia expired air. However, the speeifieation of volume or pressure is at varianee with the usual experimental eonditions where eontrol over the eomposition of the interfaeial region is usually exerted through the ehemieal potential, i.e., the interfaeial system is in thermodynamie and ehemieal equilibrium with an extended bulk phase. Sueh systems are best simulated in the grand eanonieal ensemble where partiele numbers are allowed to fluetuate. Only a few simulations of aqueous interfaees have been performed to date in this ensemble, but this teehnique will undoubtedly beeome more important in the future. Partieularly the amount of solvent and/or solute in random disordered or in ordered porous media ean hardly be estimated by a judieious equilibration proeedure. Chemieal potential eontrol is mandatory for the simulation of these systems. We will eertainly see many applieations in the near future. [Pg.379]
