A smear head causes less stagnation and overpacking than a nonreturn valve. A conventional-type reverse-tapered nozzle with the bore as large as possible without sudden changes in diameter is preferred. Other processes (except milk drying) require the finished product to be cooled to a suitable storage temperature, usually 4°C or thereabouts, and kept cool until the point of sale. Compared with conventional type, the tentacle type exhibits a marked increase in selectivity. The results observed for preparative ion exchangers of tentacle type prompted the author to test this structural arrangement of the binding groups also for analytical materials based on porous silica. Figure 12 reveals that the tentacle-specific selectivity is fully preserved when the matrix is changed. 

Although a glass sleeve for the stirrer is fairly satisfactory, it is better to use a seal of the conventional type (Org. Syn. Coll. Vol. 1,31, Fig. 2a) filled with water rather than mercury. 

When deciding on the type of the reactor required for a particular chemical or physical transformation, the first question that needs to be addresses is whether the cavitation enhancement is the result of an improved mechanical process (due to enhanced mixing). If this is the case, then cavitation pretreatment of a slurry may be all that is required before the system is subjected to conventional type transformation scheme and the scale up of the pretreatment vessel would be a relatively simpler task. 

Internal mixers of various types are produced in a range of sizes such that the appropriate capacity can be achieved for any size of production facility.
