This section describes several experiments in which the state preparation and signal detection procedure deviates from the schemes discussed in the previous sections. [Pg.59]

In a second experiment, using the same technique, the hyperfine splitting frequencies of the metastable 4s4p P2 state of Ca were measured. They provided the spectroscopic B factor which contains the electric quad-rupole moment of the nucleus (see also Section 5.3). [Pg.59]

On the basis of the same device and technique, Koch precisely measured the intense-field Stark effect in highly excited states of atomic hydrogen. Atoms in the n = 10 state, produced by + Xe electron transfer collisions, were excited to the = 25 and n = 30 states with a CO2 laser at A = 10/um. It was demonstrated that the Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation theory does not describe the experimental results properly. After a convergent behavior up to a certain order, the theory diverges for higher orders. [Pg.60]

The microwave ionization studies were extended to highly excited helium atoms, with the electron configuration ls(n 30)s It was found that the ionization rate does not increase monotonically as a function of the oscillatory electric field. The ionization curves of He exhibit one or more plateau regions and a bump near threshold. These structures are both absent in the respective curves of hydrogen. From this fact it can be concluded that these specific features are caused by the interaction between the highly excited He valence electron and the Is electron. The authors considered a quasistatic model that relates the structures to anticrossing effects of the He state under study with adjacent Stark states. [Pg.60]

The technique to shift molecular transitions into coincidence with fixed frequencies of a laser is called laser magnetic resonance (LMR). This type of spectroscopy, which is used for studying unstable molecules, was combined with the double resonance technique by Lowe and McKellar. A radiofrequency double resonance cell was placed in the 6-cm gap of the electromagnet of an intracavity laser magnetic resonance apparatus. The Zeeman magnetic field was oriented parallel to the laser light polarization (AM = 0 infrared transitions) and perpendicular to the electric field vector [Pg.60]


In order to develop a quantitative interpretation of the effects contributing to heats of atomization, we will introduce other schemes that have been advocated for estimating heats of formation and heats of atomization. We will discuss two schemes and illustrate them with the example of alkanes. Laidler [11] modified a bond additivity scheme by using different bond contributions for C-H bonds, depending on whether hydrogen is bonded to a primary (F(C-H)p), secondary ( (C-H)g), or tertiary ( (C-H)t) carbon atom. Thus, in effect, Laidler also used four different kinds of structure elements to estimate heats of formation of alkanes, in agreement with the four different groups used by Benson. [Pg.324]

The AIM scheme is popular due to its reliability with large basis sets for which some other schemes fail. Unfortunately, the numerical surface finding and integration involved in this scheme are not completely robust. The depressed prices of most metals in world markets in the 1980s and early 1990s have slowed the development of new metal extraction processes, although the search for improved extractants continues. There is a growing interest in the use of extraction for recovery of metals from effluent streams, for example the wastes from pickling plants and electroplating (qv) plants (276). Recovery of metals from Hquid effluent has been reviewed (277), and an AM-MAR concept for metal waste recovery has recentiy been reported (278).
