Compliance with the GLP principles covers many aspects of accreditation to ISO 17025. The European Union has adopted the procedures for Good Laboratory Practice of the Organization for the Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and calls on member states to take all measures necessary to ensure that laboratories carrying out tests on chemical products comply with the GLP principles. The OECD s GLP principles are part of the Eiuopean Commission Directive 2004/10/EC (http //eur-lex. europa.eu).

To illustrate how the general process described above could be performed, an imaginary case study is described in this section, using a simple QSAR for nonpolar narcosis to the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas). This QSAR was chosen because it represents a simple, relatively well-understood endpoint for toxicity. Furthermore, the endpoint is included in OECD Test Guideline 203 on the Fish Acute Toxicity Test (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, 1992), and the QSAR is recommended by the EU TGD (European Economic Community, 1996). A further consideration was the availability of test data to form an external test set. 

Outside the United States, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) publishes GLPs that have been adopted by its members and the European Union. These GLPs apply to the testing of chemicals to obtain information about their properties and/or their safety with respect to human health and the environment. The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW) has also published GLPs that apply to non-clinical laboratory safety studies that support applications to manufacture or import drugs or applications to re-examine new drugs in accordance with the country s Pharmaceutical Affairs Law. ...

EPA s Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances (OPPTS) provides Health Effects Test Guidelines for use in testing of pesticides and toxic substances and the development of test data that must be submitted to the agency for review under Federal Regulations. The European Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) also has published guidelines for inhalation studies. 

In the EEC Directive of waste movement (259/93) [11], which specifies wastes that are allowed to be translocated within, without and into the European Union, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries or the non-OECD countries, the term ecotoxicity is not mentioned. The term environment, however, is specified whereby it predominantly covers environmentally compatible utilisation and duly removal of waste. Only Article 34 deals with the obligation of the waste producer to take all necessary measures in order to maintain environmental quality in the context of the guidelines 75/442/EEC [14] and 91/689/EEC [12],...
