Oxygen used for eombustion oeeurs in the atmosphere. The ehemieal eomposition of air is approximately 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen, or one part oxygen to four parts nitrogen. In other words, for eaeh eubie foot of oxygen eontained in the air, there are about four eubie feet of nitrogen. 

Liquid oxygen (100%) and a mixture of ozone with oxygen are stable enough if the oxygen used for producing the ozone contains not more than 0.002% (calculated on C02) of organic material.

In some situations, discussed in more detail later, heat production has to be estimated from oxygen consumption alone. If a respiratory quotient of 0.82 and a thermal equivalent of 20.0 kJ/1 are assumed, then departures from this RQ in the range of 0.7-1.0 cause a maximum bias of no more than 3.5 per cent in the estimate of heat production. A further simplification is possible in respect of protein metabolism. The thermal equivalent of oxygen used for protein oxidation is 18.8 kJ/1, not very different from the value of 20.0 assumed for carbohydrate and fat oxidation. 

The most important operating parameter is the oxygen-to-biomass ratio. As this ratio increases, the fraction of biomass burned to carbon dioxide and water increases and so does the reactor temperature. This leads to an increase in the carbon conversion. Figure 6.2.22 shows the carbon conversion and the wall temperature at a distance of 1 m below the reactor outlet as a function of the oxygen consumption (without the oxygen used for heating the slag outlet).
