In most reactions of organic compounds one or more covalent bonds are broken. We can divide organic mechanisms into three basic types, depending on how the bonds break. 

The addition is nucleophilic and the actual nucleophile is CN , so the reaction rate is increased by the addition of base. This was demonstrated by Lapworth in 1903, and consequently this was one of the first organic mechanisms to be known. The reaction has been carried out enantioselectively optically active cyanohydrins were prepared with the aid of optically active catalysts. ...

Clearly, this goal will not be met overnight. Rather, a patient compilation and sorting of data coupled with reasonable and likely organic mechanisms must be presented to students to give them the tools with which to predict future processes and solve future problems.

Organic mechanisms are often indicated by arrows that show the flow of electrons in individual steps of a reaction. Many errors are made by students on exams and even in published research papers. The arrows are often drawn backward, are too numerous, or do not clearly indicate electron flow. Here are some tips. 

Vibrational spectroscopy in rigid matrices has been used extensively for studying species that would be transient in fluid media [45]. Quenching of rotational motion at low temperature typically gives lines much sharper than those observed in fluids. Studies of organic mechanisms by this technique have tended to focus on using spectra to identify the chemical structure of trapped intermediates or products.

In treating mechanisms of the important classes of organic reactions, we have tried to emphasize the experimental evidence upon which mechanistic ideas are built and to point out areas of uncertainty and controversy where more work still needs to be done. In this way we hope to avoid giving the impression that all organic mechanisms are well understood and completely agreed upon but instead to convey the idea that the field is a dynamic one, still very much alive and filled with surprises, excitement, and knotty problems.
