Organic food waste

An alternative to bio-based solvent production by fermentation is the anaerobic digestion of organic (food) wastes.Solvents that are currently made from natural gas could quite easily be synthesised from the methane produced by anaerobic digestion (Scheme 3.2). A co-product of anaerobic digestion is carbon dioxide, which can also be used as a solvent. 

There are numerous misconceptions about the sources of various chemical elements in waste, particularly those that are potential acid formers when the waste is incinerated or mechanically converted and used as a refuse-derived fuel. For example, it is often mistakenly stated that the source of chlorine in waste, hence a potential source of HCl emissions, is poly(vinyl chloride). The relative contents of selected, potentially acid-forming elements in the organic portion of a sample of waste collected from various households in one U.S. East Coast city is given in Table 2 (17). In this city, a chief source of chlorine in the waste is NaCl, probably from food waste.

Biofuels rely on organic feedstocks such as plant oil, food wastes and trees but their larger scale and rapid exploitation to meet government targets is stressing large areas of land and associated systems such as water, food production and recreation. A truly sustainable future for biofuels and other eco-system exploitation for industrial value requires a better understanding and more quantitative assessment of a number of critical issues ... 

The organic chemical industry, the food processing industry, the pulp and paper industry, the textile industry, and the petroleum industry are important industries that produce organic process wastes. Unlike inorganic process wastes, they contain dissolved and insoluble matter in the main wastewater stream thus, they are more difficult to handle for disposal. They have its characteristic biological problems and spontaneous interaction with the surrounding environment, particularly, under high solar radiation. 

The composition of industrial wastes varies depending on the industrial structure of a country or region. It consists of general rubbish, packaging, food wastes, acids, alkalis, oils, solvents, resins, paints, mine spoils and sludges. A proportion of the industrial waste is classified as hazardous waste because it contains materials that are presently or potentially hazardous to humans and other living organisms.
