Organic coatings primers

A nonelectrochemical method also sensitive to the presence of water is infrared spectroscopy with multiple internal reflection, applied by Nguyen and coworkers to study the swelKng of an organic coating at the metal-polymer interface in situ [58]. The integration of the stretching vibration of water was used as a measure of the water uptake at the interface. Stratmarm and coworkers measured the increase of the water concentration at the Fe-alkyd-polymer interface by means of single attenuated total infrared reflection spectroscopy (ATIRS) [59]. An ultrathin Fe film was evaporated onto a ZnSe crystal and coated with an alkyd primer. The authors concluded that no separate water film is... [Pg.507]

Organic coatings are applied by painting, powder coating. E-coating, plasma polymerization, and sol-gel coating [50]. The first step in painting is the selection of the primer. ASTM standards for chemical analysis of paints and paint materials are summarized in Table 13.2. [Pg.565]

Sealer n. (1) A liquid coat which seals wood, plaster, etc., and prevents the surface from absorbing paint or varnish may be transparent may at as a primer for a following coat or as a finish for the surface. (2) A coat, applied in hquid form, which is laid over a tar-like substance to prevent its bleeding through an applied paint film. Many corrosion phenomena are related to the formation of a barrier-type film on metal surfaces. In most cases this is an oxide or a hydroxide layer. Phosphate layers are important as well, especially as a primer for organic coatings. Under certain conditions, these passivating layers may be destroyed locally, which leads to special corrosion phenomena like pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Although passivity is discussed in detail in Chap. 3 of this Volume, an introduction is given in order to understand these localized corrosion phenomena. [Pg.52]
