The most valuable citrus peel oils are isolated by cold pressing of the fresh peel from the evergreen trees fruit. However, citrus peel oils produced by hydrodistillation, as well as terpeneless citrus oils are also available on the market. These oils have less valuable quality but they are more stable and less sensitive to oxidation. The oils from leaves, twigs or flowers of different citrus trees were also produced. Three citrus peel oils have monographs in EP 5, lemon, mandarin and sweet orange oil. [Pg.173]

Terpeneless orange oils (both bitter and sweet) are obtained from the respective oils by vacuum distillation and/or extraction with dilute ethyl alcohol whereby all or most of the terpenes (e.g., limonene) are removed. [Pg.477]

Essential oils boil at elevated temperatures, but many cannot be directly distilled without decomposition. Vacuum, steam, and fractional or molecular distillation are often used for their manufacture. Fractional distillation removes traces of water, resinous materials, colors, terpenes, and sesquiterpenes from the distillate. This process improves solubility and enhances flavor intensity. Sesquiterpeneless oils are more soluble than terpeneless oils because of the removal of head and tail fractions (e.g., waxy residues). Most common sesquiterpeneless oils used in the pharmaceutical industry include oil of orange and oil of lemon. [Pg.1764]
