Laminated windshields, as opposed to tempered glass windshields, are gaining in market share outside of North America. From 37% of the non-North American market of 1976, they were estimated to have reached 75% by 1982 (13). In addition to North America, Belgium, Italy, and the Scandinavian countries permit only laminated windshields, and other nations are increasing use by customer option. The trend toward laminated windshields is expected to continue and nonlaminated windshields will likely be obsolete by the year 2000 (14). [Pg.526]

The chemical-grade ore, containing about 30% chromium, is dried, cmshed, and ground in ball mills until at least 90% of its particles are less than 75 ]lni. It is then mixed with an excess of soda ash and, optionally, with lime and leached residue from a previous roasting operation. In American and European practice, a variety of kiln mixes have been used. Some older mixes contain up to 57 parts of lime per 100 parts of ore. However, in the 1990s manufacturers use no more than 10 parts of lime per 100 parts of the ore, and some use no lime at all (77). The roasting may be performed in one, two, or three stages, and there maybe as much as three parts of leached residue per part of ore. These adaptations are responses to the variations in kiln roast and the capabihties of the furnaces used. [Pg.137]

The primary inconvenience is the relative slowness and lack of comfort, especially during days of inclement weather. Many millions of Americans live gi eat distances from where they work. Some might consider bicycling five miles to work each day, but few live that near to work. The typical 20-or-30-mile commute makes bicycling an unrealistic option for most people. And for those who do live close to work, few are willing to brave the elements to bicycle year around. Ram, snow, ice, high winds, extreme cold, and extreme heat that are minor inconveniences in a vehicle become major inconveniences on a bicycle. Thus, for backup, bicycle riders usually must own a vehicle for had weather days, or have access to convenient mass transit. [Pg.152]

Bicarbonate is no longer used as the first line treatment during cardiopulmonary resuscitation following cardiac arrest. Recent evidence suggests little benefit, and the drug may actually be detrimental to resuscitation. According to the American Heart Association, bicarbonate is used when all other treatment options have failed. [Pg.638]

Costs to the patient and costs of individual products are variable but may be substantial. An epidemiological study of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients found that patients spent an average of 18 per month on herbs (range, 0-175) [46]. Unfortunately most U.S. prescription insurance companies do not cover the cost of dietary supplements. One exception is the American Western Life Insurance Company, San Mateo, California, which offers their subscribers a Prevention Plus option that covers herbal medicines [34]. In Germany, herbs that are prescribed by physicians are covered by insurance, whereas non-prescription herbs are not covered [34]. [Pg.739]

Some utilities are providing long-term on-site dry cask storage others are negotiating with Native American nations for storage on reservations, while others propose shipment of spent fuel to Yucca Mountain for interim, retrievable storage. But these options do not address waste disposal and will not convince an informed public that the waste problem has been solved. [Pg.73]

In a recent poll of the general public conducted by the American Chemical Society,6 chemistry as a career option was ranked third in a list of eight scientific professions, and chemists scored high as visionary, innovative, and results-ori-ented. Also, 59% said that chemicals made their lives better. These results sug-... [Pg.185]

The practice guideline of the American Psychiatric Association recommends that after 6 to 8 weeks of antidepressant treatment, partial responders should consider changing the dose, augmenting the antidepressant, or adding psychotherapy or ECT. For those with no response, options include changing to another antidepressant or the addition of psychotherapy or ECT. [Pg.809]

It is perhaps inevitable that we imagine ourselves creatures of choice, especially in contemporary America. Stores are filled with a dazzling array of consumer options. The general affluence of North American people give them enhanced freedoms of choice, as do the promises of democratic government. Environmentally, people clearly make decisions every day to drive, walk, or take the bus to recycle or simply throw away the trash and to apply or not apply chemicals to their lawn. [Pg.5]
