Ferrule—A mechanical fixture, generally a rigid tube, used to protect and align a fiber in a connector. Generally associated with fiber optic connectors. 

The terminals of the cables are designed to connect and disconnect conveniently with other optical connectors. The power loss due to connection is approximately 1 dB and the total loss at the 488-nm excitation wavelength of the Ar-ion laser is estimated at about 30 dB/km.

In addition to electrical connectors, PES and PPSF are used in fiber-optic connectors, shown in Fig. 13.6. Flammabihty resistance as well as resistance to chemically aggressive adhesives is necessary. Low loss and excellent dimensional stability are paramount to fiber-optic system efficiency. 

Tight buffered cables were the first generation of premises cables. The name tight buffered is derived from the layer of thermoplastic or elastomeric material that is applied directly over the fiber coating as discussed earlier. The buffer coating on the fiber makes it easier to handle and supports direct termination with fiber optic connectors (Fig 9.31). 

Fiber optic connectors are devices that are installed (terminated) upon fiber ends to allow for the interconnection and remating of optical fibers. The ferrule of each connector houses the fiber and is the specific part of the connector ahgned in a connector pair. When two connectors are mated, the fiber endfaces are mechanically aligned and held in physical contact to achieve the requisite insertion loss and reflectance performance. The connector also allows the fiber to be easily mated into the input and output ports of transceivers. 

Optical connectors may be terminated upon the optical cable in the factory or in the field. In the factory, the optical fiber is secured to the connector ferrule with epoxy, typically heat-cured, and the connector endface is polished by machine or by hand. The polishing process produces the endface geometry, (radius of curvature, apex offset, and fiber undercut) that is needed to ensure good optical performance (Fig 9.40).

Since fiber optic connectors must typically be terminated upon 900 /j,m buffered fibers, a fan-out kit with 900 /um tubing is used when directly connectorizing outside plant loose tube cables, where the fiber is normally only coated to 250 )u.m.
