A complete U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) particulate sampling system comprises four major subsystems (1) a Pitot tube probe assembly for temperature and velocity measurements and for sampling, (2) a two-module sampling unit that consists of a separate heated compartment with provision for a filter assembly and a separate ice-bath compartment for the impinger train and bubblers, (3) an operating control unit with a vacuum pump and a standard dry gas meter, and (4) an integrated, modular umbilical cord that connects the sample unit and Pitot tube to the control unit. [Pg.333]

To maximize the unit s profit, one must operate the unit simultaneously against as many constraints as possible. Examples of these constraints are limits on the air blower, the wet gas compresst>r. reactor/regenerator temperatures, slide valve differentials, etc. The conventional regulatory controllers work only one loop at a time and they do not talk to one another. A skilled operator can push the unit against more than one constraint at a time, but the constraints change often. Because of their surfactant and filming properties fatty amines such as coco-alkylamine acetate (and more especially diamines, such as tallow propylenediamine) are also occasionally employed in other types of water treatment programs. For example, they may be used as corrosion inhibitors for steel cooling systems, especially those smaller units where minimal operational control is provided. The amines must be continuously dosed to ensure good film formation (and thus corrosion protection), typically at 5 to 10 ppm active amine. Mossbauer spectra are usually recorded in transmission geometry, whereby the sample, representing the absorber, contains the stable Mossbauer isotope, i.e., it is not radioactive. A scheme of a typical spectrometer setup is depicted in Fig. 3.1. The radioactive Mossbauer source is attached to the electro-mechanical velocity transducer, or Mossbauer drive, which is moved in a controlled manner for the modulation of the emitted y-radiation by the Doppler effect.
