Omega-3-acids

Lovaza (omega-3-acid ethyl esters) is a prescription form of concentrated fish oil EPA 465 mg and docosahexaenoic acid 375 mg. The daily dose is 4 g/day, which can be taken as four 1-g capsules once daily or two 1-g capsules twice daily. This product lowers triglycerides by 14% to 30% and raises HDL by about 10%. 

This disorder is characterised by inappropriate levels of activity, a high frequency of periods of frustration and distraction and hence inability to sustain attention and to concentrate on one activity for a prolonged period of time. A surprising finding is that amphetamine administration, which normally increases or facilitates activity, rapidly and markedly improves behaviour. Patients become calm and their alertness is enhanced. A drug that has been used is methylphenidate (Ritalin). One interesting and recent development is the improvement in the condition by supplementation of the diet with polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly the omega-3 acids in fish oils (See Chapter 11).

In a randomised, crossover study in 23 subjects, omega-3-acid ethyi esters (Omacor) 4g daily did not significantly affect the pharmacokinetics of simvastatin 80 mg daily when both drugs were given together for 14 days. The combination was also well tolerated. No additional precautions would appear to be necessary on concurrent use.

Omega-3 acids are considered essential to human health, but eannot be manufactured by the human body and must therefore be obtained from food. These acids are naturally present in most fishes and certain plant oils such as soybean and canola, which are foods that people rarely consume in large quantities. Moreover, the direct addition of omega-3 fatty acids to many foods is prevented due to some characteristics (fishy flavors, readily oxidized), which together reduce the sensory acceptability of foods containing fatty acids, limit shelf life, and potentially reduce the bioavailability of the acids. Encapsulation responds to the challenges of omega-3 fatty acid delivery and extends the reach of its health benefits. 

Analysis of fatty acids (FAs) may be required for a variety of reasons. It maybe important in food process control, quality assurance, detection of adulteration, or for regulatory reasons such as labeling. In the biological field, information on the FA composition in blood and tissues may be important for nutritional and health reasons—especially for FAs of functional significance (e.g., long-chain omega-3 acids)— or for the diagnosis of some metabolic diseases. 

ASA, NSAIDs, COX-2 seleaive inhibitors, pentoxifylline, drotrecogin alfa, pentosan polysulfate sodium, omega-3-acid ethyl ester can have enhanced antiplatelet efferts and increased bleeding.
