Oil absorbent films

Uses Surfactant, oil absorbent, film-former, pigment dispersant, color enhancer in cosmetics... [Pg.3997]

Paints are commonly divided into oil-base, or solvent systems, and latex, or water-base, paints. These paints are essentially a suspension of inorganic pigments and a resin, or vehicle, in a suitable solvent. Paints protect wood surfaces by forming an ultraviolet absorbing film that adheres strongly to the surface. [Pg.303]

Polar functional groups of the additives are adsorbed on metal surfaces and this provides a barrier to prevent corrosive materials from contacting the metallic surfaces. Zinc dithiophosphates, dithiocarbamates and benzotriazoles are commonly used to protect copper-lead bearings from the type of corrosion present at concentrations of 50 to 300 mg/kg of oil. Rust inhibitors derived from sulfonates and amines also form absorbed films on ferrous metal, which prevents corrosive material from reaching the metal surface. [Pg.25]

There are three processes by which the number of oil drops in an emulsion is decreased. These are Brownian flocculation, sedimentation flocculation and creaming. But it should be noted that if the absorbed film strength is quite high, flocculation may not necessarily result in coalescence. It is also important to note that flocculation which may be due to any of above three reasons is reversible, but coalescence which follows flocculation is irreversible. [Pg.451]

When oil spreads to a thin film on water surface, it is often difficult to obtain a representative sample. In the absence of specialized equipment, oil-absorbing materials and wide-necked glass jars are often used to skim samples from the water surface. Highly viscous oils and emulsions tend to be much more concentrated on the sea surface and can be usually be scooped up easily. [Pg.1042]

Dustproofing. Oil is commonly used for dustproofing coal. When coal is sprayed with oil, the film causes some dust particles to adhere to the larger pieces of coal and others to agglomerate into larger lumps not easily airborne. Calcium chloride absorbs moisture from the air, providing a wet surface to which the dust adheres. [Pg.908]

Vehicles. The soHd pigments are dispersed iato the ink vehicle, which consists of a combination of resia, oil, and solvent. The solvent is absorbed by the paper, leaving a partially dry ink film of resia and oil that biads the pigment to the paper. This film then hardens by oxidation. Oxidation of the vehicle is aided by varnish driers, ie, metallic salts. Cobalt driers are considered the most effective (see Driers and metallic soaps). [Pg.55]

The products of oil oxidation will attack metals, and this can be prevented by keeping the system free from pro-oxidative impurities and by the use of anti-oxidants. These additives will not, however, prevent rusting of ferrous surfaces when air and water are present in the mineral oil. The presence of absorbed air and moisture is inevitable in lubricating systems and therefore the oil must be inhibited against rusting. These additives, which are homogeneously mixed with the oil, have an affinity for metal, and a strongly absorbed oil film is formed on the metal surface, which prevents the access of air and moisture. [Pg.847]

Highly cross-linked silicone films are used in cosmetics to form coatings that absorb sebum (skin oils) and prevent shine. [Pg.222]
