Pigmented color dispersion

Because of the high melt viscosity of polyolefins, normal spinning melt temperatures are 240—310°C, which is 80—150°C above the crystalline melting point. Because of the high melt temperatures used for polyolefin fiber spinning, thermal stabilizers such as substituted hindered phenols are added. In the presence of pigments, the melt temperature must be carefully controlled to prevent color degradation and to obtain uniform color dispersion.

Colorants must be introduced into the coating syrups during production of pan-coated candies. Water-soluble colorants may be used but lake pigments as dispersions are preferred. Pan-coated candies require higher concentrations of colorants than jellies or creams they require 30 to 60 coatings of colored syrup. ... 

Polyethylene is translucent to opaque white in thick sections, opacity increasing with density. Relatively clear film can be extruded from polyethylene, especially if it is quenched rapidly. The plastic accepts pigmentation readily. Most coloring is performed using dry-blend techniques. Color dispersion devices are required to ensure thorough mixing of resin and pigment. 

As a rule, low-structure carbon blacks impart greater jetness, but tint structure affects color to a lesser degree than primary particle size. Finally, agglomerates are undispersed clusters of aggregates that are physically bound together. The object of dispersion is to reduce agglomerate size and maximize pigment color development (Fig. 11.3)... 

These materials are nonionic concentrated dispersions of pigment colors. These dispersed colors contain no resin binders and are useful in aqueous systems. 

For padding of pigments and disperse, reactive and NAPHTOL AS dyes on cellulosics and blends. Promotes color build-up, dye penetration, and fabric appearance. Reduces frosting.
