Of Secrecy

As nylon and the plastics revolution became a part of modern life, the figure of Carothers receded tragically into the shadows. The horror of his death, the social stigma attached to mental illness and suicide, and prevailing social codes that discouraged the discussion of personal tragedies contributed to an atmosphere of secrecy that surrounded his life. As late as 1979, the Encyclopaedia Britannica credited Father Nieuwland with the discovery of Neoprene. 

Since the student will build neither, and since the professor probably cannot answer certain questions because of secrecy agreements or lack of knowledge, the student must learn to live with uncertainty. He will also learn how to defend his own views, and how to present material so as to obtain a favorable response from others. These learning experiences, coupled with exposure to the process of design as distinct from that of analysis and synthesis, are the major purposes of an introductory design course. 

Explosives of all types are made for commercial and military purposes in many countries throughout the world. It is, however, difficult to obtain any figures which give a worthwhile idea of the magnitude of the explosives industry. Military explosives are usually made under conditions of secrecy and no figures of output are published. Even for commercial explosives published figures are scanty and vary considerably from country to country. Data which are available are given in Table 1.1.

The subject of a trade secret must be secret, and must not be of public knowledge or of a general knowledge in the trade or business. B. F. Goodrich Co. v. Wohlgemuth, supra, 117 Ohio App., at 499. This necessary element of secrecy is not lost, however, if the holder of the trade secret reveals the trade secret to another in confidence, and under an implied obligation not to use or disclose it. These other may include those of the holder s employes [sic] to whom it is necessary to confide it, in order to apply it to the uses for which it is intended. National Tube Co. v. Eastern Tube Co., supra. Often the recipient of confidential knowledge of the subject of a trade secret is a licensee of its holder. See Lear, Inc. v. Adkins, 395 U.S. 653 (1969).

My first two interactions with the world of US Government chemical warfare were in the 1950s or maybe the 1960s when I was still a senior research chemist at the Dow Chemical Company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some perfumers, less commendably than those who create genuine bases with which to work, will extract a "heart" from their finished composition, in the form of an artificial base for the purpose of secrecy, concealing important aspects of the composition from compounders, or from other perfumers who may get a glimpse of the formula. This practice, especially when several such pseudobases are involved, can cause enormous problems when it comes to production or to the modification of the perfume for other applications. Some companies legitimately use this system of hearts when transfering formulas to branch companies, but it is a practice that should not be encouraged in perfumers. 

In reviewing the changes, we concentrate upon the most salient ones the erosion of secrecy and the intensification of competition, the acceleration of trends and of the trickle-down phenomenon, the rise of safety and environmental concerns, and the refinement of performance measurement. 

From its insistence on face-to-face instruction in the "Science of Holy Alkimy" to the oath of secrecy, Norton s story articulated the traditional path to alchemical enlightenment and served as an ideal for his sixteenth-century readers.
