This is as far as we want to take our discussion of the development of deep cultures for the production of penicillin in this chapter. It is an aspect of the production of secondary metabolites, such as penicillin, more appropriately dealt with in the technology texts in the BIOTOL series. 

The results of studies of secondary metabolites of Hawaiian endemics are primarily useful in assessing levels of variation within taxa, but some generalizations relating to relationships with likely ancestors can be made. We start our survey with a genus well known to North Americans, Bidens, commonly called beggars ticks. 

The current state of analytical SPE was critically reviewed and no major changes of the technique have been observed. Overviews of the developments of the extraction technologies of secondary metabolites from plant materials refer to three types of conventional extraction techniques that involve the use of solvents, steam, or supercritical fluids. Each technique is described in detail with respect to typical processing parameters and recent developments. Eollowing the discussion of some technical and economic aspects of conventional and novel separation processes, a few general conclusions about the applicabilities of the different types of extraction techniques are drawn. ...

Marine sponges are a source of an array of polycyclic diamine alkaloids of common biogenetic origin. This class of secondary metabolites has been the subject of four previous reviews [4-7]. Therefore, the present review will include literature reports previously not discussed, dealing with the isolation, structure determination, biological activities, and total synthesis of polycycUc diamine alkaloids isolated from marine sponges. I. PRODUCTION OF ANTIBIOTICS. The production of secondary metabolites with antimicrobial properties has long been recognized as an important factor in disease suppression (see Chap. 7). Metabolites with biocontrol properties have been isolated from a large number of rhizosphere microorganisms, including the fluorescent pseudomonads (Table 2). Further discussion is not given here since this is the subject of recent reviews (122,123).
