These sunscreen ingredients include octyl-dimethyl-PABA (UVB), 2-ethylhexyl-p-meth-oxycinnamate (UVB),octocrylene (UVA/UVB), octyl salicylate (UVB), benzophenones (UVB/ UVA), and methyl anthranilate (UVA). Avoben-zone or Parsol 1789 and mexoryl, a benzylidene camphor, block UVA. Mexoryl is the most efficient of the UVA organic sunscreens [10]. Many sunscreen formulations combine ingredients to maximize photoprotection. 

Topical applications in the form of spray also have been reported as vehicles for enhanced frawi-dermal delivery of drugs such as testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, and norethindrone acetate. More effective drug penetration was reported with enhancers padimate and octyl salicylate and compared with laurocapram and oleic acid (38). Other methods reported for enhanced percutaneous drug absorption include iontophoresis (39), ultrasound or sonophoresis (40), and electroporation (41).

Many of the models are based on experiments in which permeants were applied in aqueous solution and, therefore, their value in prediction of permeation from actual formulations applied under in-use conditions is compromised. The in vitro human skin permeation of a commonly used sunscreen active, octyl salicylate (2-ethylhexyl salicylate) was determined from two vehicles (an oil-in-water emulsion and a hydroalcoholic formulation) that were representative of typical commercial sunscreen products (Walters, Brain, Howes, etal., 1997).
