The name of this ester is n-octyl acetate, which is the odor of oranges. Esters are formed from the reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol. 

The systematic name for an ester is formed by changing the -oic ending of the parent acid to -oate. The parent alcohol chain is named first with a -yl ending. For example, the systematic name for n-octyl acetate is -octylethanoate (from ethanoic acid).

Alcohols, phenols, thiols, and amines can be acetylated with acetic anhydride in the presence of montmorillonite K10 under mild conditions.239 Octyl acetate was obtained in 1 hr from 1-octanol, in 96% yield, using K10 at room temperature. Peracetylation of sugars, such as glucose, has been done in similar fashion in 92-99% yields.240... 

The substances of different classes of organic compounds - monoterpene hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, aldehyde-alcohols and phenols were selected as antioxidants. The next substances have been investigated lemonene ( Lluch , Spain), linalool ( Moellhausen , Italy), octyl acetate ( Ventos , Spain), anise aldehyde ( Lluch , Spain), vanillin ( Dinos , China) and eugenol ( Ventos , Spain). All compounds, including test-substance - citral ( Moellhausen , Italy), were characterized by gas chromatography. 

The relationship between the ratio of the isotope peak intensity to the molecular mass peak intensity (Ir) and the isotopic ratio of were then examined. C-labeled esters and limonene were added to non-labeled compounds, and the Ir values were measured. As shown in Fig. 2, a strong linear relationship was observed between the Ir value and the isotopic ratio. The value for the esters was greater than 0.96, except for decyl acetate. The accuracy with decyl acetate was rather low (R =0.85), because the intensity of the molecular ion peak followed the normal tendency of decreasing with increasing molecular weight. The difference in the intercept and gradient between octyl acetate and the other acetates may be explained by the difference between the isotope ratio of octanol and those of the other alcohols.

The volatile oil (bitter orange oil) contains more than 90% monoterpenes (main f-limonene, also myrcene, campherr pinene, ocimene, p-cymene, etc.) small amounts of alcohols (linalool, terpinene nerol, farnesol, nerolidol, octanol, etc. usually 0.5-1% aldehydes (mainly decanal also nonanal, dodecanal, citronellal, neral acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, etc.), and ketones (carvone, a-ionone, and jasmine) free acids (octadeca-dienoic, pelargonic, cinnamic, acetic, etc.) about 2.4% esters (linalyl acetate, decyl pe-largonate, octyl acetate, geranyl acetate, etc.) coumarins (osthole and auraptenol) and others (jiangsu list and horhammer).

The acetates of most alcohols are also commercially available and have diverse uses. Because of their high solvent power, ethyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, amyl, and isoamyl acetates are used in ceUulose nitrate and other lacquer-type coatings (see Cellulose, esters). Butyl and hexyl acetates are exceUent solvents for polyurethane coating systems (see Coatings Urethane polymers). Ethyl, isobutyl, amyl, and isoamyl acetates are frequentiy used as components in flavoring (see Flavors and spices), and isopropyl, benzyl, octyl, geranyl, linalyl, and methyl acetates are important additives in perfumes (qv). 

The octyl hydrogen phthalate is filtered, washed with water, ground thoroughly with water in a mortar and finally filtered and dried. For complete purification it may be crystallized either from petroleum ether (b.p. 60-70°) or glacial acetic acid from which it separates as needles melting at 55°. The crude material, however, is perfectly satisfactory for the following experiments. The yield is nearly quantitative if the ec.-octyl alcohol is pure (Note 2).

The results cited in entry 5 serve to illustrate the importance of solvation of ion-pair intermediates in reactions of secondary substrates. The data show fiiat partial racemization occurs in aqueous dioxane but that an added nucleophile (azide ion) results in complete inversion, both in the product resulting from reaction with azide ion and in the alcohol resulting from reaction with water. The alcohol of retained configuration is attributed to an intermediate oxonium ion resulting from reaction of the ion pair with the dioxane solvent.
