Acids which are stronger than 100% sulfuric acid are called superacids. Fluorosulfuric acid (HSO3F) is one of the strongest Brpnsted acids known, with//o (Hammett s acidity function) = -15.1. There were two schools of thought concerning attempts to extend Hammett s treatment of substituent effects to electrophilic substitutions. It was felt by some that the effects of substituents in electrophilic aromatic substitutions were particularly susceptible to the specific demands of the reagent, and that the variability of the polarizibility effects, or direct resonance interactions, would render impossible any attempted correlation using a two-parameter equation. - o This view was not universally accepted, for Pearson, Baxter and Martin suggested that, by choosing a different model reaction, in which the direct resonance effects of substituents participated, an equation, formally similar to Hammett s equation, might be devised to correlate the rates of electrophilic aromatic and electrophilic side chain reactions. Streitwieser pointed out that the eorrelation whieh exists between relative rates of reaetion in deuterodeprotonation, nitration, and ehlorination, and equilibrium eonstants for protonation in hydrofluorie aeid amongst polynuelear hydroearbons (ef. 6.2.3) constitutes a relationship of the Hammett type. If the perturbations thus caused are relatively slight, the accepted perturbation theory can be used to interpret observed spectral changes (3,10,39). According to a kinetic study which included (56), (56a) and some oxaziridines derived from aliphatic aldehydes, hydrolysis follows exactly first order kinetics in 4M HCIO4. Proton catalysis was observed, and there is a linear correlation with Hammett s Ho function. Since only protonated molecules are hydrolyzed, basicities of oxaziridines ranging from pii A = +0.13 to -1.81 were found from the acidity rate profile. Hydrolysis rates were 1.49X 10 min for (56) and 43.4x 10 min for (56a) (7UCS(B)778). O-Protonation is assumed to occur, followed by polar C—O bond cleavage. The numerical values of the terms a and p are defined by specifying the ionization of benzoic acids as the standard reaction to which the reaction constant p = 1 is assigned. A Hammett plot of the pK values of p-substituted phenols against the Op values shows serious deviations for the members of the series at the extremes of the o scale, that is, for substituents that are strongly electron donating or electron withdrawing. Reactions that occur with the development of an electron deficiency, such as aromatic electrophilic substitutions, are best correlated by substituent constants based on a more appropriate defining reaction than the ionization of benzoic acids. Brown and Okamoto adopted the rates of solvolysis of substituted phenyldimeth-ylcarbinyl chlorides (r-cumyl chlorides) in 90% aqueous acetone at 25°C to define electrophilic substituent constants symbolized o-. Their procedure was to establish a conventional Hammett plot of log (.k/k°) against (t for 16 /wcra-substituted r-cumyl chlorides, because meta substituents cannot undergo significant direct resonance interaction with the reaction site. The resulting p value of —4.54 was then used in a modified Hammett equation. [Pg.321]

While generation of a Mn(V)oxo salen intermediate 8 as the active chiral oxidant is widely accepted, how the subsequent C-C bond forming events occur is the subject of some debate. The observation of frans-epoxide products from cw-olefins, as well as the observation that conjugated olefins work best support a stepwise intermediate in which a conjugated radical or cation intermediate is generated. The radical intermediate 9 is most favored based on better Hammett correlations obtained with o vs. o . The most reliable method of preparing benzofuroxans is by decomposition of o-nitrophenyl azides. Decomposition can be achieved by irradiation, or more usually by pyrolysis temperatures between 100° and 1.50° are commonly used. Refluxing in glacial acetic acid is the recommended procedure for 4- or 5-sub-stituted 2-nitrophenyl azides, but with 3- or 6-substituted compounds higher boiling solvents are usually necessary. Quantitative studies on the reaction rate have been made, and a cyclic transition state invoked, an argument which has been used to account for the greater difficulty of decomposition of the 6-substituted 2-nitrophenyl azides. The relative orientation of the substituent and the side-chain— in terms of the benzene ortho, meta, para scheme—is an added complication. Following the practice first established by Hammett in treating the furoic acids, it is customary to treat the heteroatom QNH, S, O) as if it had replaced a vinyl group (—CH=CH—) in benzene. The spectral changes which occur in increasingly acid solutions of polyaza-heterocycles may indicate a second ionization. This event, however, can readily be distinguished from dehydration by measuring the spectra in anhydrous dichloroacetic acid, provided that the pKa value for the anhydrous species is above 1.
