Novice effect

Resist the temptation to over-prescribe how the delegated task should be carried out. That is, focus on the desired outcome and the resources available to achieve the outcome. Depending on what you know about the delegatee, delegate the task in such a way that you, the delegatee, the project, and the organization benefit from the potential novice effect. 

Invoke the Novice Effect When new or transferred individuals use written guidance to do a task that is new to them, and are asked to suggest ways to improve those guidelines, the novice effect that was introduced in Chapter 2 is likely to occur. They read the guidance and think of better ways to explain what is to be done or improved ways to do it.

Historically, the discovery of one effective herbicide has led quickly to the preparation and screening of a family of imitative chemicals (3). Herbicide developers have traditionally used combinations of experience, art-based approaches, and intuitive appHcations of classical stmcture—activity relationships to imitate, increase, or make more selective the activity of the parent compound. This trial-and-error process depends on the costs and availabiUties of appropriate starting materials, ease of synthesis of usually inactive intermediates, and alterations of parent compound chemical properties by stepwise addition of substituents that have been effective in the development of other pesticides, eg, halogens or substituted amino groups. The reason a particular imitative compound works is seldom understood, and other pesticidal appHcations are not readily predictable. Novices in this traditional, quite random, process requite several years of training and experience in order to function productively. 

In the cellular automata (CA) algorithm, many small cells replace the differential equations by discrete approximations in suitable applications the approximate description that the cellular automata method provides can be every bit as effective as a more abstract equation-based approach. In addition, while differential equations rarely help a novice user to develop an intuitive understanding of a process, the visualization provided by CA can be very informative. 

One of the best books on the topic is Green Chemistry An Introductory Text by M. Lancaster, Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, 2002. Its treatment is thorough, but not always in great depth. It is clearly aimed at the complete novice. Chapter 5 of Pollution, Causes, Effects and Control (fourth edition), edited by Roy M. Harrison, Royal Society of Chemistry, 2001, describes the material in a little more depth do not be confused by the careless title of the book Basic Water Treatment by C. Binnie, M. Kimber and G. Smethurst, Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, 2002, which is neither an elementary text nor a treatise on treating alkaline water. 

Autonomic ganglia. Ganglionic stimulation occurs in both the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. Durabolin was said to have been a better choice over Deca Durabolin for the same reason. 

So, we may have to settle for sleep-onset dreaming if we want to see the effect of learning on mental content. If we are willing to accept this gift of nature, we may be able to learn from it, as our recent studies of novices learning the video games Tetris and Alpine Racer have taught us. 

Leather lettering pieces on the spines of leather-bound books are usually very thin and were attached with little paste. For this reason and because of chemical decay, many labels have either disappeared or can be levered off without difficulty. Reattachment with wheat paste can be hazardous for the novice because of the immediate weakening effect of the adhesive on the extremely thin and weak leather, which may also be darkened in the process. PVA is to be preferred because it has low water content. However, this may militate against its sticking to powdering leather, so it may be a good plan to paste the foundation of the panel and let it dry before reattaching the label with PVA.
