North American Review

Thus Daniel Ullman was in good company (or at least a lot of it). We speak of self-government as if it was. .. a grand triumph of political sagacity, cautioned the North American Review. We all admit, that particular races, the Asiatics for instance, are not yet fit for it. We interpret their incapacity by assuming that they are not sufficiently advanced on the road to perfection. Quite possibly these peoples may never advance along that road, and have no need to advance. 75 The democratic experiment may be forever closed, in other words, to certain peoples inherently unfit for the arduous demands of political self-possession. [Pg.81]

Prospector web Prospector Web is an interactive database used to find and compare plastic materials. You can specify your application requirements to search a catalog of nearly all North American plastics and increasing amounts of plastics data from European and Pacific Rim material suppliers. Materials can be searched by any of 200+ properties, reviewed, sorted, and compared to determine the material best fitted to your needs. Test data is available in both English or Metric units and ASTM or ISO format. Both Prospector Web and its sister product Prospector Desktop come with IDES s exclusive Plastics Materials Hotline to help with questions that may arise. [Pg.593]

Some years ago, Breckon and Barbour (1974) published a review of beach vegetation for the North American Pacihc Coast that contains detailed information on a wide variety of strand taxa. A number of taxa discussed in their work have disjunct distributions, involving other continental beaches suggesting other taxa worthy of detailed phytogeographic study. [Pg.179]

A North American origin for the silverswords clearly emerged from the application of DNA-sequence techniques to members of the alliance and representative Californian species (Baldwin et al., 1990, 1991). The conclusions from these studies, based on chloroplast restriction site analysis were subsequently corroborated by ITS nuclear ribosomal DNA studies. A comprehensive review of these studies can be found in Carlquist et al. (2003). [Pg.256]

Chrysosplenium enjoys a distribution that qualifies it for inclusion in several categories in this review. Members are known from northern Enrope, North America, eastern Asia (principally Japan), and extreme southern Sonth America. The similar flavonoid chemistry of the eastern North American-western North American species pair C. americanum and C. glechomaefolium was mentioned earlier, along with comments on apparent flavonoid differences between sections Alternifolia and Oppositifolia. [Pg.289]

In many wetlands NPP and decomposition are most limited by the availability of nutrients, especially N and P. For example, in a review of published data on nutrient limitations in North American bogs, fens, marshes and swamps, Bedford et al. (1999) found that a large proportion of the wetlands were either P limited or limited by both N and P, especially those occurring on organic soils. Only marshes had N P ratios in both live tissues and soils that consistently indicated N limitation, though the soil data suggested that the majority of swamps were also... [Pg.150]

Saz and Marina [148] published a comprehensive review on HPLC methods and their developments to characterize soybean proteins and to analyze soybean proteins in meals. In the case of soybean derived products, a number of papers dealing with cultivar identification [149,150], quantification of soybean proteins [151-154], detection of adulteration with bovine milk proteins [151,155-158], and characterization of commercial soybean products on the basis of their chromatographic protein profile [159,160] have been published in the last years. Other studies deal with the analysis of soybean proteins added to meat [161-165], dairy [151,165-167], and bakery products [156,163,168,169]. The same research group developed perfusion RP-HPLC methods for very rapid separation of maize proteins (3.4 min) and characterization of commercial maize products using multivariate analysis [170], and for the characterization of European and North American inbred and hybrid maize lines [171]. [Pg.580]
