Nonwoven technology

Nonwoven technologies that employ machinery and processing principles traditionally used to manufacture textile, paper, or extmded materials, when viewed collectively, form what may be termed the primary or basic nonwoven fabric manufacturing systems. These systems are or can be continuous processes. Common to each of these systems are four sequential phases fiber selection and preparation, web formation, bonding, and finishing. 

Whilst this amount covers all filtration media, the textile fabrics used for the filter media have worldwide sales of more than US 3 billion. Woven filter fabrics made from both multifilaments and monofilaments have dominated the filtration market for both wet and dry applications. However, the recent developments in nonwoven technology have allowed the process to gain market share due to cost, disposal, and production advantages. ... 

All are based on DuPont s Tyvek spunbonded, nonwoven technology based on poly(ethylene) or poly(propylene) which yields hghtweight fabrics permeable to both air and water vapour while repelling water-based liquids and aerosols. 

Medical masks are mostly produced from textiles. Weaving, knitting and nonwoven technologies are used to produce masks. But, nowadays, nonwoven technology is preferred for the mask production method. Nonwoven surfaces has good filtration properties. Mostly polyester and polypropylene fibers are used for mask production. 

This chapter discusses the development of an instrument which can measure the particles of different sizes released in the air stream when the wipe is abraded by a friction surface under a known pressure. Seven commercial wipes with different fibre content and produced by different nonwoven technologies have been compared for their lint release characteristics under five different loads. In all the wiping fabrics, number of particles of 1, 3, 5, 10, IS, and 20 pm released per liter of air on abrasion were measured at 30 second interval after starting the abrasion.

Nonwoven fabric filters could be designed as uniform and homogeneous stmctures as a filtrahon element they are also frequently engineered into composite stmcture, gradient stmcture, and layered stmctures with the help of combined nonwoven technologies. 

Wet-laid nonwoven fabrics are produced from wet-laid webs, which are formed via filtering an aqueous suspension of fibres onto a screen conveyor belt or perforated drum, and they are then bonded by one or more techniques to provide fabric integrity. Wet-laid nonwoven technology is originated from papermaking process, but the resultant wet-laid nonwovens are different from paper.
