Non-contact

In many industries a non-contact testing of vibrating parts of the various equipment is needed. To prevent the destruction of large aggregates rotating and moving in various directions with the large speed, the parameters of vibrations should be measured very carefully. Besides, vibrations reduce considerably the equipment s duration of life. [Pg.654]

Almost all microwave methods are non-contact [1] and allow simultaneous measurement of the magnitude and the frequency of vibrations. The distance between the inspected surface and microwave sensor can vary from several millimeters to a few meters. However, the accuracy of the measurement of vibration magnitude also depends on a distance between the microwave sensor and the object as well as the shape of the inspected surface. [Pg.654]

Fig. 2 shows the CFRP-sandwich specimen and the transducer mounted on the scanner. Fig. 23 presents a C-scan of the specimen as first interesting result. Only the defects visible from the outside are indicated. The distance between transducer and specimen was smaller than the focal length, so that the angle of incidence at the edge of the sound beam converts the longitudinal waves to Rayleigh-waves in the specimen. These waves provide a very sharp image of the surface. This method opens the possibility for a non-contact acoustic microscope. [Pg.842]

Another application of laser-based profilometry is the inspection of rocket and missile components. The U.S. Air Force has funded work to develop a non-contact laser-based profilometer for the inside surface of solid rocket motors. Over time, these devices are subject to slumping and cracking, which could potentially render the rocket motor ineffective and hazardous. When fully implemented, this system will provide a meaningful screening method for evaluating the condition of aging rocket motors. [Pg.1066]

This method relies on the simple principle that the flow of ions into an electrolyte-filled micropipette as it nears a surface is dependent on the distance between the sample and the mouth of the pipette [211] (figure B 1.19.40). The probe height can then be used to maintain a constant current flow (of ions) into the micropipette, and the technique fiinctions as a non-contact imaging method. Alternatively, the height can be held constant and the measured ion current used to generate the image. This latter approach has, for example, been used to probe ion flows tlirough chaimels in membranes. The lateral resolution obtainable by this method depends on the diameter of the micropipette. Values of 200 nm have been reported. [Pg.1718]

The quantitative computations were conducted using equilibrium thenuodynamic model. The proposed model for thermochemical processes divides layer of the sample into contacting and non-contacting zones with the material of the atomizer. The correlation of all initial components in thermodynamic system has been validated. Principles of results comparison with numerous experimental data to confirm the correctness of proposed mechanism have been validated as well. [Pg.414]

Reliable micro-scale measurement and control of the temperature are required in developing thermal micro-devices. Available measurement techniques can be largely classified into contact and non-contact groups. While the resistance thermometer, thermocouples, thermodiodes, and thermotransistors measure temperature at specific points in contact with them, infrared thermography, thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC), and temperature-sensitive fluorescent dyes cover the whole temperature field (Yoo 2006). [Pg.27]

The second mode of operation is the non-contact mode, in which the distance between tip and sample is much larger, between 2 and 30 nm. In this case one describes the forces in terms of the macroscopic interaction between bodies. Magnetic force microscopy, in which the magnetic domain structure of a solid can be imaged, is an example of the non-contact mode operation. [Pg.164]

A third mode, which has recently become the standard for work on surfaces that are easily damaged, is in essence a hybrid between contact and non-contact modes, and is sometimes called the tapping mode. In this case the cantilever is brought into oscillation such that the tip just touches the surface at the maximum deflection towards the sample. When the oscillating cantilever approaches the maximum deflection, it starts to feel the surface and the oscillation becomes damped, which is... [Pg.164]

Generally, water is used in this plant to cool, leach, filter wash, scrub, heat, and washdown. The unreacted ore is slurred and sent, along with chromium and other impurities originally present in the ore, to the treatment plant. The boiler blowdown, which is sometimes contaminated with chromium escaping from the process area, adds to the volume of wastewater coming from the plant. The non-contact cooling water from the plant contains dissolved sulfate, chloride, and chromate thus it is sent to a wastewater treatment plant. The scrubber water may be used to slurry the ore or discharged. [Pg.941]

An extremely useful technique for measuring the amount of size applied is non-contact on-line determination of water absorption [ 194]. The moisture content of sized warps can be derived from microwave absorption by the water present. [Pg.109]

In contrast to high density arrays low density arrays are made by deposition of pre-synthesized oligonucleotides or proteins on activated surfaces. There are several printing techniques for fabricating microarrays Non-contact biochip arrayers, commonly based on the piezoelectric effect, can apply controlled sub-nanoliter probe volumes to pre-specified locations on the chip surface. Due to the fact that the dispenser does not touch the surface, a non-contact arrayer provides low risk of contamination and is most suitable for printing on soft materials such as hydrogels. [Pg.483]

An instrument for measuring temperatures, in the rubber industry the term is usually applied to an instrument for determining the surface temperature of mill and calender rolls, moulds, etc. The instrument is usually based on thermocouples or, where higher accuracy is required, platinum resistance thermometers. Infrared (IR) techniques are now used which have the advantage of non contact but require careful calibration for the emissivity of the surface. [Pg.51]
