Before that time, experimental evidence for the existence of heterofullerenes was very rare. In 1991 Smalley and co-workers [4,5] reported on the mass spectrometric detection of borafullerenes C5q B (n = 1-6) generated by laser vaporization of graphite-boron nitride composites. Later, in the same year, the preparation of several clusters was reported [6-8]. However, none of these species has been isolated or structurally characterized. In 1994 Clemmer et al. presented evidence for heterofullerenes containing a metal as part of the framework [9]. Muhr etal. reported on the preparation of monoborafullerenes however, presumably due to the instability of these systems, no pure material could be isolated and completely characterized [10]. Real preparative heterofullerene chemistry began in 1995. The... [Pg.359]

In addition to dense monolithic ceramics, porous silicon nitrides are gaining more importance in technological applications [24], Some porous silicon nitrides with high specific surface area have already been applied as catalysis supports, hot gas filters and biomaterials [25], There is an emerging tendency to facilitate silicon nitride as biomaterial, because of specific mechanical properties that are important for medical applications [25], Moreover, in a recent study it was shown that silicon nitride is a non-toxic, biocompatible ceramic which has the ability to propagate human bone cells in vitro [25], Bioglass and silicon nitride composites have already been realized to combine... [Pg.518]

Closer in concept to the DMO process is the infiltration of aluminum alloys in nitrogen to yield Al-AIN composites. Low temperatures (<1000°C) and high magnesium or strontium eontent promote the spontaneous infiltration of liquid metal with a small concurrent nitridation to yield dispersions of AIN [34]. Similar alloys may be infiltrated at higher temperatures, resulting in nitride contents that increase with temperature to yield AlN-matrix composites [35-38]. This process can result in particulate loadings of up to 75%. The mechanical properties of these aluminum nitride composites have been extensively characterized [39]. [Pg.294]

In most efforts, the films produced were either amorphous, or their nitrogen content was less than the target of 57%. D. Li et al. [184] using a magnetron sputtering system produced crystalline carbon nitride/titanium nitride composite coatings with a reported hardness of 55 GPa. [Pg.524]
