Nickel Carbonate. Nickel carbonate [3333-67-3], NiCO, is a light-green, rhombic crystalline salt, density 2.6 g/cm, that is very slightly soluble in water. The addition of sodium carbonate to a solution of a nickel salt precipitates an impure basic nickel carbonate. The commercial material is the basic salt 2NiCo2 3Ni(OH)2 4H20 [29863-10-3]. Nickel carbonate is prepared best by the oxidation of nickel powder in ammonia and CO2. Boiling away the ammonia causes precipitation of pure nickel carbonate (32). 

Two basic carbonates are known. They are 2NiCOs 3Ni(OH)2 4H2O [29863-10-3], and NiCOs 2Ni(OH)2 [12607-70-4], MW 304.17. The second form occurs in nature as a tetrahydrate, mineral, zaratite. Commercial nickel carbonate is usually the basic salt, 2NiCOs 3Ni(OH)2 dHsO. 

When sodium carbonate is added to a solution of Ni(II) salts, basic nickel carbonate precipitates out in impure form. 

Anhydrous and basic nickel carbonates may be determined from x-ray diffraction measurements. The degree of hydration can be measured by DTA and TGA methods. Additionally nickel content in the carbonate may be determined by analyzing an acid solution of the salt using various instrumental methods (See Nickel). 

Sun et al. reported the electrodeposition of indium on glassy carbon, tungsten and Nickel. In basic chloroaluminates, elemental indium is formed via one three-electron reduction step from the [InCls]2- complex [12]. Furthermore, Carpenter reported the deposition of an indium(I) species [13].

Nucleation appears to occur readily in most carbonate dissociations. Product recrystallization may occur only after COj release as shown for CaCO, [3,4] and basic nickel carbonate [71]. There is little evidence for promotion of the interface reaction by the solid product, instead the solid product is an inhibitor through increasing the contribution of the reverese (recombination) process. Measured values of are usually comparable with reaction enthalpies (Table 12.1.). Together these features suggest that the rates of most carbonate dissociations are controlled by anion breakdown at the boundaries of reactant particles.
