The book derives from Wall s own long-term experience in TLC up to the year 2000. Chapters about the new precoated layers (Lux , UTLC, ProteoChrom ) as well as documentation are missing. The print is in black and white only. [Pg.11]

Since the publishing of the 1st edition of this book, some new precoated layers have been introduced. To simplify the visual evaluation for the user, Macherey-Nagel and Merck have developed precoated silica gel 60 layers with an increased amount of fluorescence indicator that go by the trade names of Adamant - and Lux -plates. Furthermore these plates contain a higher amount of binder which improves the abrasion resistance. Figme 7 shows the comparison at UV-hght 254 nm between a normal TLC-and a Lux -plate. [Pg.25]

It has been almost seven years since the publication of the first English Edition of my book on TEC The following improvements in technology over the years have made it necessary for me to update the first edition new precoated layers for both existing and new fields of applications, a new generation of equipment for safe operations and reproducible results, new devices such as the Diode Array Detector and Bioluminescence Analyzer, new methods of interface between TEC and analysis methods, especially the use of digital cameras for the documentation of thin layer chromatograms. At this point, there usually follows a chapter about the pretreatment of the samples. However, in contrast to HPLC/GC, sample preparation for TLC is not considered to be quite as critical. As well as the use of precoated layers with a concentration zone (e.g. an application zone consisting of silica 50 000 and a separation zone of sihca gel 60 or RP-18 material) upon which the matrix constituents can often be held back by suitable choice of solvent system, a chromatogram that is imusable for lack of sample preparation is more rapidly rectified (use a different preparation method and a new plate ) than an irreversibly destroyed column. A detailed treatment of the subject of sample preparation would exceed the scope of the present book. In Section 9.4, rm-der the title Examples of GMP/GLP-Conforming Testing Procedures , we describe the extraction of a pharmaceutically active substance from a tablet and the working up of plant components from dry extracts. The reader is referred to other TLC textbooks [2,21] and to literature and brochures produced by manufacturers of articles for sample preparation [28, 29]. [Pg.50]

Raman spectroscopy is a type of molecular spectroscopy similar to FTIR, but in this case there are no interfering bands even when sUica gel precoated layers are used. HPTLC-aluminium sheets sUica gel F254 (Merck no. 1.05548) are suitable ready-to-use plates for this piupose. After the precoat is established the solids to be removed from the filter feed are trapped on the surface of the precoated bed. This thin layer of slime is removed by a knife which is caused to advance slowly towards the drum. The knife also removes a thin layer of the precoated bed so that a new surface of the filter medium is exposed. This procedure allows steady filtration rates to be achieved. [Pg.429]

There are several advantages associated with the laser welding of garments. The external texture and appearance of the fabric is retained, strong air and waterproof seams can be made efficiently, production is fast and almost fume free, and the colour of the parent materials is unaffected by welding. The process is also amenable to automation, and multiple layers can be welded in one pass. On the downside, some fabrics need to be precoated with absorber, production usually requires investment in new equipment, and repair and rework can be difficult. [Pg.368]
