Networking Options

Road networks (early, late). In the early network option, the early corridors are supplied from 2015 on, and the full highway network is supplied from 2020 on. In contrast, in the late network scenario, the early corridors are only supplied from 2020, and the full highway network from 2030. 

For now we will only discuss logging on to the local computer. In Chapter 18, "Configuring Network Software," we will look into other logon options during an examination of Windows 2000 Professional networking options.

Cannot log on to network (option—NIC not functioning) If your computer is hooked up to a network (and more and more computers today are), you need to know when your computer is not functioning on the network properly and what to do about it. In most cases, the problem can be attributed to either a malfunctioning Network Interface Card (NIC) or improperly installed network software. The biggest indicator in Windows that some component of the network software is nonfunctional is that you can t log on to the network or access any network service. To fix this problem, you must first fix the underlying hardware problem (if one exists), then properly install or configure the network software. 

In the risk pooling Example 5.8, ABC Tools examined three network options, from completely deconsolidated to fully consolidated, based on inventory in the supply chain. Suppose ABC Tools decides to go with the option of one central warehouse suppl5dng all three customer regions. Then, the next question is where the central location should be such that it minimizes the distribution cost. 

Once the need for a network has been determined, the locations of terminals, servers, and information storage equipment must be established. Local area networks (LANs) and the worldwide web (WWW, or Internet) can link access points located in adjacent rooms or halfway around the world. However, it is critical that the network uses consistent computer and data transmittal protocols in order to provide uninterrupted, information handling in an efficient manner. For example, serial communication via an RS-232 port is relatively common, but too slow for most machine applications. Ethernet communication via transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) is a preferred method because most equipment suppliers offer this network option. The TCP/IP method allows computers to share resources, no matter whether the operating system is for an Apple , a version of the Microsoft operating system for PCs, or the UNIX operating system. Also, the Semiconductor Equipment Communication Standard (SECS)/Generic Equipment Model (GEM) is widely used as the interface between the host computer and assembly machines. 

The NURB surface model of the block example (Fig. 12a) was successfully created using Feature Following Network option in just about 5 minutes (Fig. 12b). The accuracy measures i.e., the deviation between the surface model and the polygon mesh, are 0.00 inch and 0.0006 inch in average and standard deviation, respectively, as shown in Fig. 12c.

Thus, as it compares different distribution network options, a firm must evaluate the impact on customer service and cost. The customer needs that are met influence the company s revenues, which, along with cost, decide the profitability of the delivery network. 

If Matt could design a new network from scratch (assume he did not have the Chicago plant bnt could build it at the cost and capacity specified in the case), what production network would you recommend Assume that any new plants built besides Chicago would be at the cost and capacity specified under the new network options. Would your decision be different if transportation costs were half of their current value What if they were double their current value ...
