Nettles

Nettle is stated to possess antihemorrhagic and hypoglycemic properties. Traditionally, it is used for uterine hemorrhage, cutaneous eruption, infantile and psychogenic eczema, epistaxis, and specifically for nervous eczema. [Pg.99]

Throughout history, the root has been used as a treatment for asthenia, atherosclerosis, blood and bleeding disorders, colitis, and relief of symptoms associated with aging, cancer, and senility. Ginseng is also widely believed to be an aphrodisiac. It is promoted as a tonic capable of invigorating the user physically, mentally, and sexually. It is also said to have antistress activity (see Chapter 60 and page 95). [Pg.99]

Nettle (Urtica dioica L. or Girardinia diversifolia) is a perennial plant which is cultivated for food, fodder, cosmetics and medicine as well as for its fiber [37]. Although nettle [Pg.237]

The advantages of nettle crop are the necessity of low agronomic inputs, suitability for organic farming, reduction of soil erosion and recovery of over-fertilized soils due to being a nitrophilous species [38]. Bacci et al. [39] obtained around 1700 kg ha fiber yield of nettle crop. [Pg.238]

Bodros and Baley [37] studied the tensile properties of water retted nettle fibers. Bacci et al. [39] investigated fiber yield of nettle cultivation and quality of fibers extracted by alkalization. Bacci et al. [38] compared the effects of different fiber extraction method combinations including water retting, mechanical decortication and enzymatic treatments on resultant fibers chemical composition and tensile properties. Bajpai et al. [40,41] prepared nettle fiber-reinforced poly lactic acid (PLA) and PP composites by compression molding. Bajpai et al. [42] studied the effects of various environments on the tensile strength of nettle fiber-reinforced PP composites. [Pg.238]

Crude chlorophyll is prepared commercially from alfalfa meal or nettles by extraction with alcohol and partition into benzene. It is used as a colouring matter, particularly for foods and pharmaceutical products. [Pg.95]

CgHjClaOj. M.p. 155°C. Used as a selective herbicide. It is made from 2,4,5-trichloro-pheno) and sodium chloroacetate. Ester sprays and combined ester sprays with 2,4-D are available. 2,4,5-T products are of particular value in that they control many woody species, and eradicate perennial weeds such as nettles in pastures. [Pg.384]

Scientists and engineers at the University of Exeter are investigating whether natural fibers tike hemp and sisal could be used to make sustainable and eco-friendly brake pads [39]. The technology of brake pads turned green with the replacement of asbestos by aramids (hke Kevlar of DuPont) in the 1980s. Kevlar is very expensive and eco-friendly alternatives like hemp, jute, sisal, nettle, and flax are much, much cheaper. A breakthrough in this application will revolutionize brake manufacture and protect the environment. [Pg.1034]

Allergenic plants causing skin eruption by contact include poison ivy (Rhus radicans L.), poison oak (Rhus toxicodendron L.), poison sumac (Rhus vernix L.), and stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.). In the United States, poison ivy and poison oak cause nearly 2 million cases of skin poisoning and skin irritation annually, for a loss of 333,000 working days. In addition, these weeds cause 3.7 million days of restricted activity among those people who are susceptible to the toxins (1). [Pg.10]

Other living things besides animals also use acid to sting. The stinging nettle bush has sharp, hollow hairs that contain various chemicals, including formic acid, that irritate the skin of any animal that is unfortunate enough to rub up against it. [Pg.90]

Herbal preparations may be prepared by freezedrying or air-drying. Fresh, freeze-dried leaves of nettle were shown to be effective for symptomatic relief in allergic rhinitis. The active components in nettle, histamine and acetylcholine, became ineffective when the... [Pg.732]
