Uterine hemorrhages

Oxytocin is used to induce labor for conditions requiring early vaginal delivery such as Rh problems, maternal diabetes, preeclampsia, or ruptured membranes. It is also used to augment abnormal labor that is protracted or displays an arrest disorder. Oxytocin has several uses in the immediate postpartum period, including the control of uterine hemorrhage after vaginal or cesarean delivery. It is sometimes used during second-trimester abortions. [Pg.844]

Avens is stated to possess antidiarrheal, antihemorrhagic, and febrifugal properties. It is used for diarrhea, catarrhal colitis, passive uterine hemorrhage, intermittent fevers, and particularly for ulcerative colitis. [Pg.86]

Nettle is stated to possess antihemorrhagic and hypoglycemic properties. Traditionally, it is used for uterine hemorrhage, cutaneous eruption, infantile and psychogenic eczema, epistaxis, and specifically for nervous eczema. [Pg.99]

Oxytocin is used to induce labor and augment dysfunctional labor for (1) conditions requiring early vaginal delivery (eg, Rh problems, maternal diabetes, or preeclampsia), (2) uterine inertia, and (3) incomplete abortion. Oxytocin can also be used for control of postpartum uterine hemorrhage. [Pg.875]

Extensive uterine hemorrhaging was observed in a 2-month pregnant woman following the intentional ingestion of 2 mg/kg white phosphorus in rat poison (Hann and Veale 1910). [Pg.80]

White Phosphorus. There is limited information on the reproductive effects of white phosphorus in humans. Uterine hemorrhaging was reported in a 2-month pregnant woman who intentionally ingested a lethal dose (2 mg/kg) of phosphorus (Hann and Veale 1910). In male and female rats orally exposed to white phosphorus, no effects on reproductive performance were observed at relatively low doses (0.075 mg/kg/day) (Bio/dynamics 1991 IRDC 1985). In... [Pg.139]

Appropriate treatment of asthma is critical to the health of mother and infant. Undertreated asthma in the mother is associated with preterm labor, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and uterine hemorrhage. In the infant, intrauterine growth retardation, low birth weight, and congenital malformations may result from poor asthma control. [Pg.1433]

Frequently, a menopause must be quickly induced, as in cancer of the ovary or in uterine hemorrhage. This is done by radiation or by the removal of the uterus. Severe vasomotor symptoms occur when the menopause is thus suddenly induced. Estrogens —among other drugs -are used in the amelioration of these symptoms. [Pg.2629]

Ergonovine (ergometrine or ergobasine) (XVI) is a water-soluble alkaloid of ergot (66). The position of the double bond has been revised (67). Ergonovine is one indole derivative that has a sympathomimetic action with a predominantly stimulating action on the uterus (68, 69). It is employed in obstetrics to reduce uterine hemorrhage after childbirth. [Pg.234]

Obstetricians administer methyl-ergonovine after delivery to reduce uterine hemorrhage. This drug causes vasoconstriction, but more importantly causes tonic uterine contraction. The force of the muscle contraction impedes blood flow through the uterus which significantly reduces bleeding. The other uterine... [Pg.148]

Iron deficiency arising from hemorrhage may be due to a variety of common disorders, chronic or acute, such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, hemorrhoids, menorrhagia, and uterine hemorrhage at parturition. [Pg.408]

Hydrastis extracts and hydrastine hydrochloride have been used for stopping uterine hemorrhage and in relieving menstrual pain. Current use is mainly as components in eyewashes and in certain bitter tonic preparations. [Pg.337]
