El Sayed and Nelson reviewed 42 trials between 1963 and 1993 including six trials prior to 1965 and one trial using razoxane, a nonstandard chemotherapy agent (73). A drawback to the El Sayed analysis is the inclusion of a single trial that had been accounted for twice because of its publication in two different journals. The addition of chemotherapy to locoregional treatment added an absolute benefit of 4.0% absolute benefits of concomitant chemotherapy were 8% (neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy were not assessed).

Two later studies attempted to amend some of these deficiencies. One study by W. H. Nelson and colleagues [1984] used a double-blind randomized design to evaluate response in 13 patients with PMD and 12 patients with NPMD who received 150 mg of either imipramine or amitriptyline over a 4-week period. At the end of this trial, 2 of 13 patients with PMD had a Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression [M. Hamilton 1960] score of less than 8 [complete remission of symptoms], whereas 7 of 12 patients with NPMD had achieved remission.

In J959, Goodwdn-Bailey reviewed trials reported in the L SDA Marketing Research Report No. 322 (Walkden and Nelson, 1959) as an impressive achievement, with over half a million bushels (14 000 tonnes) of wheat and shelled corn treated and protected with pyrethrins and the synergists PBO, sulfoxide or MGK 264 between 1952-1957. The most commonly used combination was pyrethrins plus PBO, in some eases providing 2-3 years protection, The effective control of some 13 species of insects encouraged the spread of the pyreihrins plus PBO combination.

Adverse events reported in clinical trials of red clover products were minor and similar in the placebo and red clover groups (Coon et al. 2007 Lethaby et al. 2007 Low Dog 2005 Nelson et al. 2006). 

A second meta-analysis, including six placebo-con-trolled red clover isoflavone trials, with doses ranging from 40 to 80 mg daily, and study duration from 12 to 16 weeks, concluded that adverse events did not differ between isoflavone and placebo groups, although the events were not well characterized in several trials. Gastrointestinal symptoms were generally the most common adverse events in both isoflavone and placebo groups (Nelson et al. 2006).
