Standardization is obviously of paramount importance to data mining. Programming resources are scare, and data locked in unsupported formats can be lost forever. However, whereas the basic idea that standards are useful is generally shared, the real-world situation is far from ideal. In a perfect world, standards would be developed first and agreed upon by all interested parties. With these standards in hand, interoperable products would be developed, but experience shows most standards created this way utterly fail. Standardization is a complex process, and experience is only gained through stepwise development and usage. [Pg.111]

To be most effective, a majority of MUE program resources need to be devoted to education and process improvement, rather than measurement and simple data collection. An additional important component is regular (at least annual) evaluation of the overall MUE program to assess its value and improve the MUE process. [Pg.547]

The Appendixes to Volume 1 contain sample lines of inquiry, which may be used for ISM verification, lessons learned to allow readers an opportunity to learn from the experiences of their peers, and a listing of program resources. [Pg.5]

Additional sources of information on hazard analysis and exposure assessment are listed in Appendix C, Program Resources. [Pg.24]

The following list of program resources is not intended to be a comprehensive list (no list can be), however it does provide useful references most of which can be accessed via the internet. This list will be updated and additional resources will be added to the electronic version of this document available on EH-5 s Chemical Management Web Site (http //www.eh.doe.gov/web/chem safety/). [Pg.56]

This Handbook consists of two volumes. Voliune 1 contains the core material, including a discussion of the elements of a quality chemical program and information on applicable DOE, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) directives, standards, and requirements. The appendices to Volume 1 contain sample lines of inquiry, which may be used for ISM verification lessons learned to allow readers an opportunity to learn from the experiences of their peers and a listing of program resources. [Pg.75]
