Water loss in operating an HDR faciUty may result from either increased storage within the body of the reservoir or diffusion into the rock body beyond the periphery of the reservoir (38). When a reservoir is created, the joints which are opened immediately fill with water. Micropores or microcracks may fill much more slowly, however. Figure 11 shows water consumption during an extended pressurization experiment at the HDR faciUty operated by the Los Alamos National Laboratory at Fenton Hill, New Mexico. As the microcracks within the reservoir become saturated, the water consumption at a set pressure declines. It does not go to zero because diffusion at the reservoir boundary can never be completely elirninated. Of course, if a reservoir joint should intersect a natural open fault, water losses may be high under any conditions. [Pg.271]

Bolton s opinion was bolstered in June 2005 by Senator Richard Lu-gar s survey of 85 non-proliferation and national security analysts from the United States and other nations. It was designed in part to characterize the risks related to the terrorist use of CBRN. The survey revealed that experts believe the probability of an attack somewhere in the world with a CBRN weapon was 50% over the next five years and 70% over the next ten. An attack with a radiological weapon was seen as the most probable with the likelihood of an attack with a nuclear or biological weapon considered about half as plausible [37]. Similar anomalies over buried ore deposits have been reported by other Chinese workers (see Chapter 13). Using a gold-film detector, workers at the Chinese National Non-ferrous Metals Corporation (CNNC) analysed Hg in soil gas and near-surface atmosphere at the Naking Pb-Zn mine, where stratabound ores occur in fractures in Permo-Carboniferous strata. The region is covered by about 30m of allochthonous overburden. Mercury anomalies of up to three times background occur in both soil gas and near-surface atmosphere above a fault that intersects the ore (Fig. 12-23).
