A further important aspect is how to handle reactive elements It was found in the Clausthal group that nanocrystalline aluminum and nanoscale silicon made in 1-butyl-l-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide react even with the comparably low level of oxygen (<1 ppm) in an inert gas glove box. Under air the deposit can be oxidized on the time scale of a few days. Maybe in situ passivation methods will have to be developed. One could think about deposition of a reactive element in an ionic liquid, washing off the ionic liquid, followed by passivation in a different liquid. [Pg.372]

Equation (7) shows that the reduction of the oxygen concentration to a given value due to chemical reaction occurs in the nanoscale silicon particle over a smaller time interval than in the bulk silicon. [Pg.445]

Exposed filler surfaces are always coated by a nanoscale silicone resin network, although this is only apparent at much higher magnification, as can be seen from the detail (white arrow) in Fig. 3b. [Pg.831]

Finally, the question arises as to the molecular structure of the polymeric, nanoscale silicone resin network, with one partial aspect still largely unknown, namely a possible connection between molecular stmcture and durability in practice [14, 15,40,41]. [Pg.847]

Building materials exposed to weathering are corroded by the action of atmospheric influences, especially water destruction is unavoidable in the long term. Water-repellent treatments can certainly not totally stop these harmful processes, but, given adequate envelopment and attachment to the substrate, nanoscale silicone resin networks can retard material decomposition because of their high durability. Since damage caused by hydrophobic measures can be virtually ruled out if the treatments are properly applied, the organosilicon compounds used in masonry protection will become more and more widely used. [Pg.853]

We are nowhere close to knowing the potential benefits that nanoscale silicone resin networks, with their special structure-effect relationship, will be able to offer irmovative technologies of the future (nanotechnology). By virtue of their organic-inorganic hybrid nature, silicones open up new paths to special functionalities and enhanced properties of materials. [Pg.853]

Use of nanotechnology is also found in thermosets where a new generation of nanoscale silicone and core-shell particles is dramatically modifying the properties of heat resistant thermosets. Even small additions of the particles can significantly increase the fracture toughness and impact strength of reactive resin and other plastics. [Pg.83]
