Most usually they inject a solution (in a suitable edible oil) of an ester of nandrolone, either nandrolone decanoate (also known as Deca-Durabolin or Depot-Turimbol) or nandrolone phenylpropionate (Durabolin). These are more easily assimilated and are then hydrolyzed in the body. 

Nandrolone is very similar in structure to the male hormone testosterone (see p489 and p507), differing by one methyl group, and has many of the same effects in terms of increasing muscle mass, without some of the more unwanted side effects such as increased body hair or aggressive behavior. Sample preparation Condition a 1 mL 100 mg Bond Elut Cl SPE cartridge with 2 column vol of MeCN and 2 column vol of water. Mix 500 gL serum with 25 xL 5 rg/mL IS in MeCN, add 500 xL water, vortex for 5 s, add to the SPE cartridge, wash with 2 column vol of water, wash with 1 column vol of MeCNiwater 10 90, elute with 1 mL MeCNiwater 45 55, concentrate the eluate to 250 gL under a stream of nitrogen at 45°, inject a 50 [xL aliquot.

Sample preparation Condition a 3 mL 500 mg Baker C18 SPE cartridge with 2.5 mL MeOH and 5 mL water. Serum. Mix 2 mL serum with 4 ng IS and 15 mL 150 mM pH 5 acetate buffer, sonicate for 5 min, add to the SPE cartridge, wash with 5 mL 150 mM pH 5 acetate buffer, wash with 10 mL water, wash with 2.5 mL MeOH water 40 60, elute with 4 mL MeOH. Evaporate the eluate to dryness under a stream of nitrogen, reconstitute the residue with 100 xL MeOH, inject a 5 pL ahquot. Urine. Heat 2 mL urine, 10 ng IS, and 20 pL S-glucuronidase/aryl sulfatase (Helix pomatia) (Boehringer Mannheim) at 37° for 12 h, cool, add 15 mL 150 mM pH 5 acetate buffer, add to the SPE cartridge, wash with 5 mL 150 mM pH 5 acetate buffer, wash with 10 mL water, wash with 2.5 mL MeOHiwater 40 60, elute with 4 mL MeOH. Evaporate the eluate to
