There are four major types of barrier materials used now in the US for military purposes a)Water-proof b)Greaseproof c)Water-vapor-proof and d) Combinations of a,b c. Almost all the barrier materials in use today are composed of several layers or plies. The plies are usually cemented together with suitable adhesives(/< mi anrs) to form a laminated structure, although several other methods of making multi-ply sheets are also used. Materials used for making plies include kraft paper, cotton scrim, aluminum foil, polyethylene, cellulose acetate, Mylar, etc... [Pg.23]

Initial adhesion tests were made with 3.5- X 1- X 0.064-inch specimens of aluminum (Aluminum Associates No. 2024) and cold-rolled steel (polished ASTM A-415). Later tests were made with strips of copper, chrome-coated steel (Weirton Steel Co.), and brass with molded nylon 66 bars and with Mylar 300A poly (ethylene terephthalate) film. Before use, the specimens were washed (scrubbed with a soft bristle brush) with a solution of Alconox detergent, rinsed with water, rinsed with acetone, and dried. [Pg.574]

An infrared C02 laser (1060 nm) was used to cut through a polycarbonate PC (black) (carbon-coated) wafer of 250-pm thickness to create microfluidic channels. The laser-machined black PC wafer was then thermally bonded between two transparent PC wafers at 139°C under two tons of pressure for 45 min [937], A C02 laser was also used to ablate Mylar sheets (with adhesive). Then the machined Mylar sheets were laminated together [1051]. Moreover, a PMMA substrate was machined by a C02 laser [201,202]. However, the microchannel ( 200 pm deep) has a Gaussian-like cross section and a certain degree of surface roughness [201], The C02 laser has also been used to machine PET substrates [203],... [Pg.32]

Adhesion between the Mylar backing and the PDMS stamp was enhanced by pre-treating the Mylar surface with an adhesion promoter (1205, Dow Corning). [Pg.261]

Because PDMS stamps are soft, a mold was fabricated (with Norland optical adhesive (NOA 73)) and used for the AFM analysis (Fig. 10.28c). A 25 pm NOA 73 photopolymer film was first coated on to a 12-inch x 14-inch glass sheet and laminated on to a PDMS stamp. The replication was completed by crosslinking the NOA 73 by UV exposure and removing the PDMS stamp. AFM images of the Au lines on a Mylar substrate fabricated using pCP from the stamp is shown in Fig. 10.28d. [Pg.262]

Other anhydrides such as dodecyl succinic anhydride (DDS A) or adducts of DDS A with polyglycols, can also be used for formulating heat cured epoxy adhesives. These have excellent electrical properties and good thermal shock resistance. Anhydride cured epoxies are also useful for bonding plastics, notably polyester such as Mylar.8... [Pg.233]

Polyethylene terephthalate cannot be solvent-cemented or heat-welded. Adhesives are the prime way of joining PET to itself and to other substrates. Only solvent cleaning of PET surfaces is recommended as a surface treatment. The linear film of polyethylene terephthalate (Mylar) provides a surface that can be pretreated by alkaline etching or plasma for maximum adhesion, but often a special treatment such as this is not necessary. An adhesive for linear polyester has been developed from a partially amidized acid from a secondary amine, reacted at less than stoichiometric with a DGEB A epoxy resin, and cured with a dihydrazide.72... [Pg.375]

Adhesion Properties. The adhesion properties of two graft copolymers (numbers 7 and 8 in Table I) were studied using several rigid substrates and were compared with the adhesive properties of the homopolymers from which they were derived. The data are given in Table V. Although the peeling force measured at 180°C and 1 cm/min varied considerably with the substrate, it was not very sensitive to the composition of the adhesive. As the PTHF content increased, a small decrease in peeling force was observed with PPO, aluminum, and brass substrates. A small increase was observed with Mylar and chrome substrates. [Pg.585]

Crystallographic Structure and Adhesion of Aluminum Thin Films Deposited on Mylar... [Pg.453]

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) has been used to characterize aluminum thin films thermally evaporated (vacuum around 10 4 Torr) on Polyethyleneterephtalate (Mylar) and to correlate the crystallographic structure of the system Al/Mylar and the adhesion of the aluminum films. The adhesion of these films has been measured by a Peel test technique. For the polymer, an amorphous layer (t=12 nm) followed by a crystalline film have been observed on a Corona treated film and the opposite configuration has been found on a bi-axially stretched film. Some spherical precipitation ana interdiffusion zones have also be observed in the Mylar for the films which have the lower coefficient of adhesion (100 g/inch). The main conclusion is the augmentation of the adhesion of the aluminum film as the size of the grains decreases and/or as the microroughness of the Al/Mylar interface increases. [Pg.453]

Addition of 0.5 - 2.0% (active) CNC REZCAT 3 to carboxyl functional vinyl acetate based adhesive formulations significantly Increases adhesion to plastic films such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and mylar. [Pg.164]

Although the majority of vacuum coating installations now in use are batch-type units, a few have been made for semicontinuous coating of paper and plastic films such as cellophane, cellulose acetate, and Mylar. Mylar exhibits unusual adhesion characteristics for the vacuum-deposited aluminum film, and is potentially the source of a host of decorative and functional products. [Pg.122]

Solid dimer polyamides used as vehicles for flexographic inks (14, 24) possess the required alcohol solubility to make it possible to use them on presses with rubber rolls. Their adhesion to films such as polyethylene, Saran, and Mylar is excellent, and their flexibility ensures that they will function properly on these flexible substrates. In addition, they have excellent gloss and good blocking resistance. Thus, they are commonly used on polyolefin, Saran, cellophane. Mylar, cellulose acetate, and PVC films. [Pg.971]

The potential for corrosion caused by adhesives requires evaluations in both cured and uncured states. In one test, the adhesive components or the cured adhesive are applied to aluminized-Mylar film and examined after 48 hours for etching or transmittance of light through the Mylar. A second test involves embedding copper wire with the adhesive and measuring corrosion by resistance changes in copper wire. Because of the wide variety of tests and the fact that they are closely related to adhesive reliability issues discussed in Chapter 6, the reader is referred to that chapter. [Pg.359]
