The lead in studying both the cause and prevention of molten metal-water thermal explosions has been taken by Alcoa. The Aluminum Association also sponsored several research programs both at Alcoa and at Battelle-Columbus. The Ai onne Natio Laboratory has carried out experiments with molten aluminum and water. 

This accident led to a concerted effort by the aluminum industry to study the phenomenon and to find preventative measures. Basic studies have been funded by the Aluminum Association for research at Battelle Memorial Institute, ITT Research Institute, and the Alcoa Research Laboratories.

Initial adhesion tests were made with 3.5- X 1- X 0.064-inch specimens of aluminum (Aluminum Associates No. 2024) and cold-rolled steel (polished ASTM A-415). Later tests were made with strips of copper, chrome-coated steel (Weirton Steel Co.), and brass with molded nylon 66 bars and with Mylar 300A poly (ethylene terephthalate) film. Before use, the specimens were washed (scrubbed with a soft bristle brush) with a solution of Alconox detergent, rinsed with water, rinsed with acetone, and dried.

AA. Aluminum Association produced a four-digit system for wrought aluminum alloys and a three-digit system for cast alloys. Examples are alloys 6010 (wrought) and 356 (cast). A temper designation is also required. It follows the alloy designation and indicates the heat-treated or mechanically worked condition of the alloy such as 6010-T6. The T6 suffix indicates the alloy is in the precipitation hardened condition for optimum strength.
